Simon Cowling writes (abridged from TR Action #358: With no weather excuses members have got a wriggle on these last few weeks both in the UK and abroad.
Regarding UK events. On 18 July Peak District 25 commenced, now a TR Register annual event, hosted by the Derbyshire Dales Group. Over fifty visitors descended on Buxton from afar as Kent, Wiltshire, Essex and Wales. The Friday run to the Carding Shed-Oil Can Café at Holmfirth enjoyed the best of the weekend weather, Saturdays run was not as enjoyable as heavy rain and mist descended. But with lunch taken at the Old Hall at Hope the stunning limestone gorge of Winnats Pass came into play on the route back to Buxton for the evening events. Unfortunately, Sunday was a wash out and the scheduled run and entrance to the Ashover Classic Car and Bike Show was abandoned and goodbyes were said after breakfast. It must be said that the weekend weather did not cooperate and the offering of spectacular road trips through the iconic Peak District were curtailed. However, the feedback and abundant words of thanks for the arranging party led by Dave and Gwen were greatly received. Let’s hope next year’s weather will cooperate.
On 27 July our thanks went to Barry and Hazel Cockayne, for a most enjoyable Sunday run. Meeting at the Highfield House Farm, Ashover, where some has a pre run breakfast, fifteen cars set off on a scenic route which included an ice cream stop in the sunshine at Tagg Lane Dairy and then onwards to socially conclude for lunch at the Lockkeeper, Tapton Hill Lock.
On 28 July Mark Ockendon sounded the Claxton as a raiding party was coming over the border on 31 August from the Leicester and Trent regions to do battle over breakfast. Bandits led by Roger Guy and Peter Sloss descended upon Croots Farm Shop, Belper and were met by a welcoming committee led by Jim Tulley and Mark Ockendon. A dog fight of fifteen to twenty cars ensured around the lanes of our green and pleasant Peak District before being finally dispatched back over the border.
On 2 August Ian and Ryan Walker attended the Cromford Steam Rally and entered a TR6, an ex-military Land Rover 109 and a long wheelbase. We’re still waiting for a plausible answer as to how the two of them got them there.
On 13 August Bob Cornwall, our newly elected East Midlands coordinator, joined twenty-five of us at South Wingfield Social Club for an enjoyable balmy evening BBQ that lasted till the sun disappeared and some beer ran out. During the evening Graham Ludlam, from the local Chesterfield MG Club, made his presence known as they’d planned to use our meeting place for their end of season Goodnight Sweetheart run on 28 September. Of course, we were delighted that they liked our chosen venue and many of us have planned to join them, as we’re hoping for some reciprocal attendance at ours on 5 October.
On 19 August at The Crispin, date moved forward a week so as not to clash their Bank Holiday closure, sixteen of us gathered for a chin wag which again lasted until nearly closing time.
With members spread right across our region, we continue to host two Club Nights per month and your raiding parties are most welcome, so please let us know if you intend to join us and also if you’re planning a tour in our area.
