A Wonderful Summer's Day at Yattendon Classic Car Show, Sunshine, TRs & One Unhappy Trunnion

The Kennet Valley Group enjoyed another excellent day at the ever-popular Yattendon Classic Car Show at the end of June, with ten vehicles proudly representing the group in what proved to be one of the highlights of the summer calendar.

Set in the heart of the quintessentially British village of Yattendon, the show once again attracted an impressive variety of classic and vintage vehicles. Under glorious blue skies and warm summer sunshine, visitors were treated to an outstanding display of cars in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Our line-up showcased the breadth of the Triumph TR range, with examples spanning from the elegant TR3 through to the muscular TR8. Adding a little variety to the display was a stunning 1985 BMW 325 M3, which complemented the TRs perfectly and attracted plenty of interest throughout the day.

As always, members enjoyed catching up with old friends, chatting with visitors, and sharing stories about their cars. The Yattendon show continues to be one of those events that perfectly captures everything we enjoy about classic car ownership, beautiful surroundings, wonderful cars, great company, and plenty of enthusiastic spectators.

Unfortunately, the day ended on a less fortunate note for Phil Horsley. As his TR250 was leaving the showground, the nearside front trunnion failed, causing the front suspension to collapse and allowing the inner wing to drop onto the tyre. Thankfully, the incident occurred at very low speed and resulted in no bodywork or tyre damage, although recovery was required.

The failure serves as an important reminder to all TR2 - TR6 owners about the maintenance of front suspension trunnions. They should be lubricated regularly using EP90 gear oil, as originally specified by Triumph, or with a high-quality molybdenum disulphide (CV) grease if preferred. More importantly, it is good preventative maintenance to dismantle the trunnions periodically to inspect the threads on both the trunnion and the vertical link for signs of wear. These components are critical to the safe operation of the front suspension, and regular inspection can prevent what could otherwise become a very serious failure.

Despite this unfortunate ending, it was another thoroughly enjoyable day for the Kennet Valley Group, with an excellent turnout of cars and members helping to make Yattendon another successful event on the KVG calendar.
