Devon Social Scene Report 363
01st June, 2026
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Derek Hurford passed away on 4th April, following a long battle with cancer. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and our thoughts are with Janet, Victoria, and Katrina at this difficult time.
Derek was a dedicated and active member, playing a key role in many events. His final organised occasion was Drive-it-Day which unfortunately he didn't make, it was a fitting reflection of his commitment and enthusiasm. A passionate TR enthusiast, Derek had been a valued member of the TR Register for many years and served as Group Leader from 2012 to 2016 and then South West Director from 2017 to 2022. Those who knew Derek will remember him fondly for his vibrant personality and warm spirit. There was never a dull moment in his company, he always had a humorous story to share. Outgoing, supportive, and a true friend to many, Derek was also known as a stylish and smartly dressed gentleman. He was wholeheartedly committed to TRR Devon and had a deep passion for his own TRs. He leaves behind many cherished memories and will be greatly missed by the entire TR community.
Our March Sunday Lunch took place on a gorgeous sunny day, perfect weather for getting the TRs out on the road. We started with coffee at Tinpickle and Rhum Café near Hay Tor on Dartmoor, followed by a short scenic drive to enjoy a delicious carvery at the Kestor Inn. Many thanks to Peter and Sarah for organising such a lovely outing.
We also fitted in an extra Sunday Lunch in March, starting with a visit to the Donkey Sanctuary before driving on to meet up with the Dorset Group at the Tuckers Arms in Dalwood. Although I wasn’t able to attend, I heard it was a fantastic day with an excellent roast. There was a great turnout of 35 people and an impressive display of TRs. Many thanks to Karen Maple, Dorset Group for organising such an enjoyable event together.
In April, a small group gathered for coffee at the Country Lanes Garden Centre in Okehampton, followed by ten of us enjoying a Sunday roast at the New Inn, Sampford Courtenay on the edge of Dartmoor, a favourite pub we return to often.
By the time you read this, our much-anticipated Drive-it-Day will already have taken place. This year’s outing featured a ride on the Seaton Tramway, followed by lunch at the Hare & Hounds, a traditional pub located between Sidmouth and Honiton. The Seaton Tramway runs narrow-gauge heritage trams alongside the River Axe Estuary, passing through two nature reserves known for their abundant wading birdlife..
Join us on the first Wednesday of the month at the Traveller's Rest, Tedburn Rd, Exeter EX4 2HQ for some friendly TR chat. The pub reserve a space for us and there is no need to pre-book. Come for food from 6.30pm onwards or just a drink. Wednesday 3rd June / 1st July
