John and Ian report -

Derek can usually fix anything mechanical, and in January he extended his skills, much to the delight of SDG members, by fixing a tour around Harvey's Brewery in Lewes. Mr Edmond Jenner guided 28 of us around this most traditional plant, describing the process whereby the hops, malt and yeast, not forgetting the 'liquor' (or spring water to the layman) are turned into our favourite local Sussex tipple. Mr Jenner was a most entertaining host, relating stories and anecdotes from days gone by. We were surprised to learn that back in the 1790s the founder, Mr John Harvey, in addition to brewing wonderful beer, was also a coal merchant delivering both beer and coal to the folk of Lewes and the surrounding district from the same cart. At the end of the tour we were able to sample the products, which went down particularly well...... so much so that several of us decided to continue at the John Harvey Tavern (not quite until closing time). A thoroughly enjoyable and informative evening. Unsurprisingly, TRs were left at home! Thank you Derek.

February club nights at both Chailey and Netherfield had quizzes prepared by John B. For once car related questions were in a small minority, and, with multiple choice answers, at least everybody answered every question! An enjoyable evening all round, thanks John.

Drive it day is now confirmed at Borde Hill Gardens, with our TRs taking pride of place in front of the main house. Sussex Hospices will be running a raffle and providing prizes. The first prize will be a ride in a 1934 Aston Martin Ulster which, hopefully, will be on display at the event. Magnificent Motors, Senlac at Bodiam and Darling Buds Of May will be the SDG shows in 2017, along with Chailey Bonfire Society St George's Day event on 22nd April, Drive It Day on the following day and a visit to Tangmere Military Aviation Museum on Sunday 14th May. Our continental trip to Bayeux is at the start of June. TR season is about to blast into full swing! See http://www.southdowns-trs.org.uk for more info about club activities.
