Members Cars - John Scarr's TR4a
John Scarr's TR4a - L JN 785 E Triumph TR4A 1967 This is a U.K. Home market car, sold in the N.E.to its first owner by the South Shields branch of Dunns` Garages in January 1967. Dunns` Garages of the N.E. were an authorised distributer of Triumph cars from the factory, with branches in Sunderland, South Shields, Herrington and Durham. It was acquired by the present owner in 1993 and underwent a complete chassis off rebuild over the next five years. It is a Hard Top Model of the TR4, designed by Giovanni Michelotti, as the body style to follow the TR3A, and was produced from 1961 to 1968. The “A” designation indicates it is from the later run of the TR4 series when independent rear suspension was fitted. It is powered by the same 2138cc. four cylinder engine as the 3A with a modified cylinder head giving 104bhp. Factory quoted top speed of “110mph in Touring Trim” Factory Optional Accessories which were fitted to this car when new were, Overdrive operating on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears; wire spoked wheels, a heater and a folding canopy soft top for use when the hard top is removed. This was known as a “Surrey Top”. The car is painted in its original colour of Royal Blue, has been fitted with a brake servo, electric cooling fan, and an improved camshaft. It is used on a daily basis locally and for touring holidays both in the U.K. and on the Continent.
