February 2022 Newsletter

I wonder what those two guys went to buy, fish and chips surely!!

It looks very much as though we may be returning to some sort of normality at last and that we can start to return to normal life, whatever that is now with all the stuff going on in the country at the moment.

Firstly can I thank all of you that have volunteered to organise one of our Sunday local TR Lincs runs. We now have a full calendar for 2022 and the second issue can be found by clicking the link HERE.

You will also notice that I have included a monthly Thursday lunchtime meet. If anyone has any favourite spots where you think we could meet then let me know. Some of you will have received notice of future events directly from the TR Register Website when I post the events. This is an automated feature that send notifications to fully paid up card carrying members only and not to the partners of members who I know like to also know what's going on. They can rest assured that I will also publicise all the events via this newsletter so don't feel left out.

Forthcoming Events

Next Lunchtime Meet - Thursday, 17th February, 2022

Our next lunchtime meet will be at the Inn at Woodhall Spa. I have reserved places for us in the restaurant and we will be able to order from the "all day menu". They have asked that we pre-order please. I know this can be a pain but it seems to be the way of hospitality venues these days for any more than 10 people. I do need your responses by the 10th of February please so can you complete the booking form by clicking HERE. The full menu is available for you to view HERE

Annual Dinner 26th February 2022

Visit to Grimsthorpe Castle 24th April 2022

Sunday 24th April, 2022 see us visit the historic Grimsthorpe Castle kindly arranged by Tim Davies.

Grimsthorpe Castle is a magnificent country house set in our wonderful Lincolnshire countryside, four miles north west of Bourne. It lies within a 3,000 acre park of rolling pastures, lakes and woodland landscaped by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. It has been the home of the Eresby family since 1516, when it was granted by Henry VIII. The present owner is Jane Heathcote-Drummond-Willoughby, 28th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby, granddaughter of Nancy Astor, who died at Grimsthorpe in 1964.

In the First World War, Grimsthorpe Park was used by the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force as an emergency landing ground. During the Second World War part of the park was used as a bombing range.

In 1944 the castle housed a company of the Parachute Regiment while it was recovering from operations in Italy and was later used for training for what was to become Operation Market Garden.

And Finally

With all the issues around E10 petrol and the future of running our cars on whatever will pass for fuel in the coming years I was reminded of simpler times, or were they? When you filled in those days you had to decide if you need 2 star, 3 star, 4 star or even 5 star. Should I put a shot of Redex in for good measure? What about some Molyslip to quieten down those big ends? Diesel pumps were not to be seen. The sharp eyed will see that the 5 star pump has price of 6 shillings seven and a halfpence per gallon on it. That is around 33p a gallon or just over 7p per litre!

Continuing on the petrol theme, how many of you have joined the A1 at Markham Moor just off the A57 and noticed the strangely roofed building on the southbound carriageway. It now houses a new Starbucks coffee shop but did you know that it was actually built in 1960 for National Benzole and initially it was just the roof at a cost of £4,500. It remained like that until 1989 when the space beneath was bricked in and a Little Chef opened up. It became a Grade II listed building in 2012. Who knew?

See you soon
