Social Scene Report - TR Action Issue 311

TR Action 311

Publication Date: 28th January 2019

Derbyshire Dales Group

Alan Ford reports:

Firstly, Happy New Year to one and all. Secondly, an apology to each for not wishing you 'a Merry Christmas' and a 'Prosperous New Year' in our last submission for'Social Scene '. I'm afraid that time had run away with me. Those notes for TR Action 310 were written in October, when the forthcoming festivities seemed months away - which they were. Hey ho! In the event I hope that you all had a jolly time and followed whichever traditions you and your families subscribe to. And no! - yet again Father Christmas didn't bring me another TR, either. However, at the time of writing this, at least two of our Derbyshire Dales members are in the process of sewing enormous Christmas stockings in the hope of a TR filling them – Penny Heath is chasing a long sought-after '5', whilst Dave Burgess is chasing an unspecified TR to add to his collection. Good luck to both.

Things seem fairly quiet in terms of the Derbyshire Dales Group. The evening meetings at The Amber Hotel are reaching such proportions that the room is pretty much full. Meanwhile the Steering Group is working in support of our Group Leader Dave Burgess and is meeting regularly, and looking to recruit more members to assist with supporting the Group. One benefit of the Steering Group is that the planning for next year is in full swing with some very interesting events afoot. The various TR and Austin Healey rebuild projects are well underway. In this regard Alan Jones has updated the 'Projects' section of the Derbyshire Dales webpages with more photographs of these projects for any who care to look. Not shown there is Alan Wilkinson's latest manifestation of a TR6 with a rebuild incorporating full EFI.

Meanwhile, it seems that a couple of our members came away from the TR Register's AGM with results. Dave Burgess was appointed both as Vice Chairman and as East Midlands Director whilst he was also awarded with the accolade of providing the most iconic photo for TR Action, plus Dave Warne was appointed North East Director. Congratulations to both, busy chaps!

In terms of forthcoming events, we have booked a talk by Peter Rix from the Barnes Wallis Foundation who will talk about Barnes Wallis' life and work, a subject covering ship architecture, lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air aircraft design, and, of course, armaments including the bouncing bomb. The talk takes place on 8th May next year at the Horse & Jockey, Wessington - just down the road from our usual haunt at The Amber. He is a very popular speaker with a subject which we hope is of interest to most members and their partners; the event is held on behalf of the Foundation - a charity - and is open to all.
