Brass block drain 6 cylinder

Should be repairable. Remove it, take it apart, then lap the rotating part into the body using metal polish (Brasso etc).

As Bob says. I also stretched the spring a little on mine to get some tension back

 

you can just put a bolt in with a suitable thread seal and cap it off.

Be aware some of the repros leak worse than original, buy from the guys who supply steam engine modellers.

Debris also collects in the water jacket around the back of the block. While you have the drain tap out, it's worth giving the cooling system a thorough flush and poking wire through the drain hole. It's not possible to fully clear serious corrosion sediment this way, but looking with a wire will dislodge some of the crud.

Nick - if your tap doesn't respond to fettling and stop leaking, I've got a few here surplus to my requirements which I have collected over the years- see photos below - they are £10 each and the one looking like a tap is £20

This is why I think it is better to have an ordinary blanking plug. Having a tap in there reduces the size of the hole to let the debris out and almost always ends up blocking the tap so you end up removing it anyway. Having to take the plug out gives you the opportunity to poke about in there and remove the crud.

The one advantage of a block tap -with a nose- is that it allows you to fit a plastic tube to it that’s long enough to avoid getting the coolant all over the starter etc 

If your removing a blanking plug anyway no extra work to remove the tap after draining if you need too

Plastic bag over the starter motor.

Socket on a stick to undo a 1/2” unf screwed plug on my car.   I got fed up with the drain tap being too tight for me to open.
