3pm on a Sunday was the best programme on Radio 2, IMHO. The end of an era.

Perfect listening whilst fettling the TR.

Also perfect for a Sunday afternoon drive.

My wife would always say  "Quick... Switch the radio on... It's 3 O'clock."

RIP Johnnie.

He was a big part of my musical education in the early Seventies, introducing me to West Coast US artists including Steely Dan and Jackson Browne.

Steely Dan were a NY band.

Pedants are us!

Steely Dan was infact a steam powered dildo created by Burroughs in one of his novels from the 50s, the writing and recording duo of Becker and Fagan formed a short lived band of that name, but from their third album, they became a studio band with other selected participants.

Can't buy a thrill, the bands first album is in my top 25 album list!

Not pedantic at all, at all!

Thank you Ian. After more than 50 years my misconception around Steely Dan has been laid to rest!

Can anyone remember this incident from his Radio 1 lunchtime show quiz? A female contestant completely lost the plot when she got the wrong answer.  To say that she threw her toys out of the pram would be an understatement!   JW  was completely taken back by her out burst at first but ever the professional he calmed her down.   funny how things like that stick in ones mind.    He will also be remembered for  refusing to play the Bay City Rollers, calling it rubbish (which it was) and  getting the sack from the BBC over it.   IMO he was a  better DJ than the late John Peel and he was pretty good .

RIP Johnny

I think that JW actually did play a BCR track on his last show, having recounted the story of refusing to play them. JW just seem to chat to the listener as if he was in the same room and the only listener.

John Peel is still broadcasting.

John Peel died in 2004, unless I have misunderstood your comment.

Cheers,

Tim
