Postage Costs

Recommended Posts

I was considering a small stocking filler and was tempted by Revingtons TR4 Police Car scale model; £23 not too bad, but plus VAT and shipping at £16.20 !!! Is someone taking the Michael or is it to be delivered by one of the 3 Wise Men?

Crikey that's the Michael if I've ever heard one! Might be cheaper to drive there and collect in person at that charge, environment be damned!

They are doing a flat fee £15 shipping no matter what I think now.

Hi John,

Moss don't do Stag parts as such.

Next time I'm there I could collect and post it to you.

Forward the details

Roger

Could be a nice little side-line business for you there Roger, pickup and dispatch at sensible postage costs :) I suspect you have better things to do tho!

I recently needed the little oil seal for the speedo drive on my TR3, I called Overdrive Repair Services and the chap popped one in the post 1st class, it arrived the next day and he didn't even charge for the stamp!

It's a small thing that is worth much good will.

I have also recently ordered parts from Moss who charged £15 for a parcel that I know the post office charges just under £5. To be fair to Moss there was a problem with the delivery and Moss refunded the £15 when I phoned, but the initial 300% mark up is taking the mick big time

I don't want to be the voice of big business and like you I continue to try to use suppliers of all kinds of items, who offer value for money . . . However;

Has anyone given any thought to the cost of packaging?

For a small item I agree, it's negligible, but a small seal needs a jiffy bag, which can cost about the same as a stamp, so there is a legitimate doubling of 'carriage cost' straight away.

For larger items, the cost of a box, the cost of packaging (be it bubble wrap, air pocket or brown paper) and the cost of packing tape.

It all adds up.

'Cost of packing and carriage' is a better description

This is about postage, not packaging.   There's another scam going on, and it affects  those poor Sub-Post Office managers again.

Before Xmas, I wanted to send a small part to Australia.   Another Triumphero needed it, couldn't get one anywhere and I had a some.     Boxed it, weighed the box, and looked up online at the PO website how much was the postage.      It was about £9.

Took the box to my local Sub-PO and presented it at the counter, to be told that it would cost me £18.   I asked them to check that, as I had just looked it up at home and been told it would be half that.   "It always cost less if you pay online", they said.    "In that case, that's what I'll do"    "You're not supporting your local PO then, are you," was the hurt reply.

But double the cost was too much, so I did go home and pay the postage online.  What's more, the web page offered to have the package collected from my door, FREE OF CHARGE!    It was collected next day.

This makes me wonder if the PO is purposely undercutting the Sub-POs, to put them out of business.   Spite?

John I've have identical experiences

The OP was using the additional cost of 'postage', but the small part he was planning to buy, needed packaging carefully to prevent damage.

I would suggest that there was a packaging element in the cost example given.

One of my pet hates!

When you need a single gasket (water pump in this case).............!!!!!!!

Better to invest in some gasket paper John and cut your own in future John.

I have (use to ) use the Post Office on-line and the rates were OK. I would take the item to the local  PO delivery office, get the paper stamped and off it would go.

Then , they decided to reduce the opening hours -  08.30am to 10.00am  - sod that that AND no parking.

I now use a Sub PO and am happy to pay. Is the item safe  - of course not. Slightly better than Evri but only just.

Usually if you send a paid on-line item through the Sub PO then you are expected to pay the difference

A couple of months ago I sent a small package to the USA at £25 - wow!!!
