Wanted TR4 Electrical Temperature Guage NOW FOUND

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a Tr4 electrical water temperature guage.

It's  the type with the needle pointing down I don't mind if it's flat or domed glass or even no glass

Please send a PM if you have one going spare

I believe the needle points down on all the TR2-4 variants. The electrical ones all work the same, the later ones with the top of the needle shielded are actualy the same inside as the early ones. you can also fit the dail from a capillery type (TR2-3B) to any of the electrical ones (which is what I have done).

The tricky bit is calibrating the gauge to match the sender.

Hi Bob

It's actually for my TR3 which has a TR6 guage with the shield removed but it looks a bit odd because the needle points up. I thought electric as opposed to capillary because the car is setup that way already.

It's all part of crossing off of the long list of niggling little faults with the car

I changed my '3 to electric because with the capillery setup it was impossible to get properly behind the center dash to do any work because the capillery pipe could not be disconnected. I did however wish that the change was not detectable, so did the dial swap.

Bob

Did you convert your capillary type guage to electric or go for a TR4 one?

I did briefly consider fitting the inards of my TR6 guage upside down into a non working capillary guage that I have, but realised it would be working backwards.

The other downside of the capillary type is the bulb quickly becomes stuck in the cylinder head, so any head or dashboard work then has a potential extra complication

No to conversion - not really feasable. I ended up buying several electric gauges from various places, & actualy ended up using a TR4 fuel gauge innards with the TR3 Temperature dial. They are all the same inside !
The fuel one was less troublesom to calibrate accurately. it is a very fiddly operation !

I make a point of avoiding anything that involves removing the centre dash panel because it was so much hassle to fit it in the first place I don’t want to go back there.

Rgds Ian

PS I did manage to replace my failed temperature gauge earlier this year without removing the panel.

You can get a brass insert to fit in the thermostat housing to make it easier to remove the capillary bulb.

Thanks for the fuel guage tip Bob. I think someone I know has a TR3 one going spare

Thanks  Stuart

Charging a fortune for postage seems to be a theme at the moment, Moss wanted £15 of a small delivery when I ordered from them last week.

George

Yes I know they all seem to be going for that as a flat rate, postage is dear now anyway and also the insurance on stuff if its worth good money has jumped as well.

Stuart.
