Applying for historic motorcycle status advice

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks

I have a little 1979 Honda that has been sorn’d for over 10 years (owned for about 20)

I want to do the admin to get it classed as Historic on the logbook V5c that I have.

Do I just use the v112 dvla form ?

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5f7eceefe90e07741465559a/v112-declaration-of-exemption-from-mot.pdf

Which says I need to present at a post office when I go to tax the bike

but that would normally need insurance which I don’t want or need as I just want the historic status and to remain sorn’d

I'm aware that you need continuous insurance to a taxed vehicle (even if the tax is free and don’t need an mot)

is it possible to go historic and remain sorn’d and not have to mess with insurance ?

help appreciated

Not sure I can answer specifically regarding keeping the vehicle on SORN, but when I put the TR back on the road in 2010/11 after it was off the road since 1987/88 and wasn't yet classed as Historic I went along to our local Post Office where the chap behind the counter knew exactly what to do and the process involved him keeping the V5 to send off to be amended. I was 'taxing' the vehicle but I imagine the PO would know whet to do if you want it to remain on SORN. I also don't know whether you need to insure a SORN'd vehicle now?

After typing this it's probably not much help

Hamish, I did something similar to Rod for one of the cars. I took the paper work in and they new exactly what to do. I recall that the process was not actually shown anywhere so it must be some sort of secret known only to grizzled sub-postmasters.

I referred to a higher authority, my brother, who has done this for a number of old bikes:

"You take the V5 to a post office, fill out a form, they take your V5 and send it off to DVLC. A few days later you get a new V5 sent to you with the bike classed as historic.

You also have to fill out another form at the post office to confirm that the bike is historic and is exempt from the MoT. And that’s it. No need to insure it or mot it to do any of do this.

But Hamish will still need insurance before he wheelies off into the sunset on his powerful steed! "

Thanks guys

I’ll give it a go and try historic status ( both me and the bike) then sorn it as no insurance needed when sorn’d

whilst I used to have some bike bikes cc and stature

this is just a little Honda xl185 that was at an auction and all proceeds to charity. An unexpected buy !!

I understood it needs to be classed as historic to benefit from no cost road tax.
mot is academic because I always mot my classics if going to be on road or track

i need sorn so I don’t need to insure them.

makes sense to me
