Matt, satin or gloss ? Looks matt to me but then again my car could do with a wash…

I believe it was matt originally, but mine is now satin. Still looks good though.

FWIW this is why the factory decided on black for the back panel.

Any one in need of a petrol filler cap like the one in the photo?   I have an unfitted original.   The type with the catch not the early magnetic ones that pop open when the car has an impact.

A lot of the extra black muck on the rear of MDU 743F, the prototype X776, was because it initially used a TR5/250 chassis with the shorter exhaust tailpipes. Later images show it with crudely welded on extensions to the tail pipes so that they lined up with the rear edge of the bumper.

The black rear end was developed by Bruce McWilliams  from over in the US and he was the one who also came up with the larger petrol cap for the TR250/6 which was adapted from a Leyland Truck. There is a great interview with him by Steven Rossi in VTR magazine 33 if you can get hold of a copy which details how and why they came up with the styling features for both the TR250 and TR6.

As for matt or satin black I'm in the matt camp albeit my own has satin black now that I have polished it!

As I understand it as Stuart pointed out the reason was thus. However I  thought the very early 6's 68' built came with normal paint and then the dealer painted the back or in some cases didn't.

elclem1 ,

All TR6 had their rear end painted black by the Liverpool factory.  It was a TR6 styling feature and the painted shells would not have left Liverpool for Canley without it. As for Dealers they would do whatever the customer wanted and it that included painting the rear end body colour then that's what would have happened. I do remember one such TR6 with only overed 766 miles that had left the factory in New White, the customer wanted a Pimento Red TR6 so they sprayed it that colour, he still didn't like it so the car was stored for some 20 plus years unused. You could till see the New White when you opened the bonnet.

Thanks Derek - really like seeing the old factory pics. I’d really be interested in a thread if you were so minded which just showed TR6s in the factory.
