Kiwifrog
To prevent accidental engagement when going forward
John Morrison
Hi Les, welcome to our forum. Indeed the 'Lift' on the gear-lever is to put reverse onto a different plain than the forward gears so its not possible to shift seamlessly from fourth to a fifth that isn't there! Achieved by a step in the reverse selector rods I've seen this step worn away over time, by lazy lifts on the stick, and then it was possible to go from fourth to fifth, John. Grahamgl
There are only four gears plus reverse in my gearbox.

stuart
Ive lost count of the number of times Ive told people off for just smacking the gear lever over into reverse rather than lifting to engage, it eventually erodes the step on the selector cup and as stated above if that happens then it means its easily possible to select reverse when going third to fourth. MichaelH
If the step does get worn it can be taken out and a little bit of weld will replace the worn edge. It does need a radius to allow reverse to be selected Its a safety step to prevent falling into reverse by accident MichaelH
