TR4 Repro Cross Tube

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Has anyone fitted a TR4 repro cross tube from Moss - do they fit?  I'm struggling to fit mine - usually jacking up under the front of the chassis widens the turrets enough to get the cross tube in however even after this I am struggling to get it to fit.  I'd be grateful if anyone who has experience of these repros could let me know if they fit before I do anything drastic....

Thanks

Myles

Myles; I have an original Triumph TR4 cross tube in the garage.

You could borrow it in order to determine whether your problem lies with your chassis or the Moss repro cross tube.

I live in Thame, and am going to send you a PM.

Myles - even OE cross tubes can be very tight and even jacking up under the front crossmember doesn’t always open up the turrets - you may have to set up some sort of hydraulic ram to give you enough leeway to fit it

FWIW if you need to jack the turrets out to fit the tube then do get your camber checked after fitting.

I am about to replace a missing attachment bracket on my TR4 front cross tube. The remaining bracket is twisted as in photos. Should I be straightening the existing bracket or bending the new one to match. I have been looking at photos online but can’t see one with enough detail to tell.

Hi Thomsk

just to be different when I fitted my TR4 radiator I used the correct body mounting holes for the stay !!!!!:o

If you look at my pic below you will see the rod(s) going slightly above into the body attachment.

The angle of the rad brackets is in good alignment and the rods are the correct length

However I was forced to do it as both my cross shaft lugs had come off and I really didn;t want to weld them back on.

Both lugs are twisted.  You can just about see the twists in the photo I took when I removed mine to repaint.

Thats to cope with the angle of the stay rods up to the brackets on the top of the rad.

Roger’s post is interesting. I had not thought about another option.
I now know to bend the bracket before welding. I will assume other one has correct bend and match it in reverse.

many thanks to all for the great photos and explanations.
