If your own seats need reconditioning then get this done and enjoy the originality of your fine TR6, with TR6 seats. It is a TR6 not a Mazda or MGF. Too many thrones going about nowadays which look totally out of character with what the TR5 and TR6 stand for. Sorry to be so negative but I do not give TR's a second look if they have been bastardised with "foreign" items.

Hate to disagree but the original TR6 seats are the worst ever so uncomfortable. Each to their own but I would not drive a car that had rubbish seats just to keep it stock, it’s not as if the Mazda or later designs look ****.

I would have loved to keep my car seats original (CP, no head rests), but the increased risk of a whiplash wasn’t worth it in my opinion. Our little xars are easily overlooked.
So I up- (or down-) graded to MX-5 seats (early type with separate head rests), and am really happy with it, and they give more comfort too.

I have not come across MGF seats in a  TR, fwiw.

My seats are fine, just want to upgrade them. Besides, if someone owns their car, its up to them what they do to it, this old fashioned "its not supposed to have this or that" attitude has been left in the dark ages where it belongs.

Agree to a point maybe you should buy an MX5 and put TR6 seats in to it and get the best of both worlds! LOL

Bolt in replacement seats are hardly an irreversible change.8

The point is TR6 seats are total rubbish, uncomfortable and downright horrible, the only reason people change is for those reasons. Why would you say buy an MX5 when your interest is in a TR6 just because of seats

My CR seats with headrests in my CP car are neither rubbish, uncomfortable nor horrible in any way.  They are actually the total opposite and the seats are actually a very nice place to be.

Seat choice is very subjective.  If you are trying to compare knackered worn out 50+ year old seats against something much newer (comparatively) then you aren’t comparing apples with apples.  Try sitting in a newly refurbished seat before making any decision or giving any opinion.

The simple fact is everyone’s body shape is different and our bodies are typically not the age and shape these cars were originally designed for.  For my wife and I, our seats suit our body shapes perfectly and we have travelled many thousands of European miles in them.

Cheers

Having sat in both types of seats the MX5 seats are far better.

If you throw a dodgy back into the mix and a head rest if the worst happens the choice is clear. Although I love originality my own preference will be to retain both, then if and when the next owner comes at some point they can have the choice.

Besides I wonder how many cars are truly original in every detail. They might look the part but have lots of hidden improvements like Stainless exhaust/brake pistons, Silicone brake fluid, braided lines, Ali petrol tanks, upgraded fuel pumps etc etc. Do we decry all these?

Folk have been customising their wheels since the first chariots hit the turf!

Andy, you can't point a stick at "improvements" you can't see. My point was with the seats, although I certainly could point a big stick at spurious shiny blingy parts that the specialists sell, only because they can't be bothered to have the original parts remade properly and the profit margin and availability on the chromey blingy is far greater.

Shame really.

I bought my TR6  in the early 80s, and the seats were one of the things that appealed to me.  Fast forward to my recent restoration, and I didn't even consider changing out the seats, even though that would have been a much cheaper way to go.

To me, the refurbed original seats look good and feel good.

I am not going to sit in the most uncomfortable car seats, with no upper back or neck support, for the sake of originality. The OE ones are bagged up in the loft if anyone really wants to take out the comfortable ones later. I can supply a hair shirt to go with them.

I also bagged up and kept the smelly injection system, non functional gauges, rusty steel tank and lousy brakes.

I have a 1970 TR6, with the original TR6 seats.  Both seats have never been rebuilt, and the drivers seat has collapsed (Diaphragm).  This works well though, I end up sitting 'in' the seat, as opposed to 'on' the seat.

The 4-point harnesses do hold you in well, and have never felt uncomfortable driving the car, be in doing the Lands End to John O'groats event (2000 miles in 48hrs), or a 10 countries car run (10 countries driven over a 4 day period), plus the off weekend to Scotland & Wales.

Maybe rebuilt ones, where you sit perched on them maybe possibly uncomfortable, but my original ones are fine.

Cheers.

Have gone the non-original seat route. My original seats are stored and can be refitted. The MX5 seats give excellent support and I can attest to no back ache even after 2 48 hour Round Britain Reliability runs and 1 10 countries rally. I have MGF seats in my midget. They are also very comfortable. They are a bit larger than the MX5 seats.

Cheers

My original seats were fully refurbished in around 2017 as my wife and I still found them to be ridiculously uncomfortable.  That compounded with the lack of neck support led me to change to MX5 tomsbstone seats.

I agree that these are not OEM and do not look OEM but the benefits for me outweigh that.  Mine are also heated and when I get round to wiring them in will be even better.

Having just done 2000 miles around Scotland, I can attest to comfort .... as can my wife.

It's the owners prerogative to fit what seats they like to their own car, it's a a matter of personal taste. I can't agree that the original seats are as bad as some are saying though, I find my 1969 seats perfectly comfortable. Maybe it's a question of seats being either worn out or badly restored.

My TR5 is so removed from stock and will continue to be so and as I am slightly deaf I can not hear the adverse comments and all is happy in my world. Mind you I have built a concours winning TR5 to factory stock and they got it right from day one. I got frustrated with it as I like to improve so as I had two I decided to sell it to a fellow member. My Jasmin TR5 has power steering, electric windows, EFI, four pot callipers and vented discs, Mazda seats amongst many other things which makes the driving in my personal view so much better. Nothing wrong with originality but in my case I love to fiddle and improve.

I will get my coat,

I fitted MX5 seats with seperate headrests 10 years ago and they have preserved my back on many long journeys. I did have them recovered in leather to match the ribbed style of the original seats which I still have. I would agree that MX5 seats with cloth or slab leather dont look right in a TR6. However we should all have our cars as we want them !
