Good question.

TR2/3 with Lockheed hydraulics has a 1/4” clutch pipe and 3/16” brakes.   NB  Lockheed clutch slave cyl.  Lockheed brake circuit.

Girling hydraulic type on later use 3/16” clutch.  NB Girling clutch slave cyl.  Girling brake circuit.

TR250/5/6 Girling brake and clutch master.  NB  Lockheed clutch slave  Girling brake circuit.

Perhaps the Lockheed clutch slave is the reason for the 1/4” pipe.

Now I might be talking absolute bo$$oc£s but would it have anything to do with the the cars before the 5 & 6 having a spring on the slave and the 5 & 6 not having the spring return!!! :ph34r::huh:

Nope, they all have the two different size piping,, its been all the way through.
