TR4 Boot Lock Escutcheon

Recommended Posts

Hi all, local locksmith made a key from the barrel, however when locked the whole will rotate and it seems the "nibs" on the escutcheon are worn  and don't grip the bootlid. It seems the only way to have a secure boot is to buy a complete handle. Not sure about the quality of these available on ebay etc - the benefit of someones experience would be nice -- thanks

Hi John,

there could be other problems -

1 - the handle escutcheon nibs may well be worn as you say

2 - the boot skin cut outs may also be rounded.

3 - if the boot lid has been repaired then there may be a thick(ish) layer of filler under there. This moves the nibs away from the skin and loses support.

I think I may have a spare escutcheon - PM me your address and I'll have a look tomorrow.

On my boot lid I made a polished Stainless steel plate that fits on the outside of the skin panel where the handle goes through.

This gives the escutcheon some to lock onto.  It is apprx 3" x 4" - a flat plate with a 3mm lip along the bottom that fits onto the bottom edge.

I have a new handle and escutcheon.

No Key.  I think it is FS896  - see stem photo.   Where are the car shops with keys that you could just try in your locks ???  Perhaps I should risk buying a key on spec.

The handle is TR3A boot and the fitted escutcheon looks like TR4/5 boot

With  a key I could remove the escutcheon but I have no key.

I do not want the escutcheon as it is incorrect for a TR3A

If I can get the escutcheon off without damage it is yours for a fiver £5.00 plus postage.

Any suggestions?

Hi Peter, ?not a TR4 fitting. My lock has key hole in middle of the handle and the pins or nibs on the escutcheon seem much longer than mine - though not to say it won't work

Looks like I will have a key to undo the lock in a day or so.   More info once all is in bits.

IF it is the boot lid skin hole that is worn, the problem can be fixed from the inside by inserting a small steel plate with the original size hole just behind the boot skin [there is a small space there] and fixing it against the skin with 2 part panel adhesive.

I make up a box shaped piece to go between the skin and the inner re-enforcer to stop the skin being pulled in when the handle engages with the ramp of the catch. It too has the correct hole with the two cut outs and stops the plinth turning too which helps also if those cut outs have been worn in the skin.
