Where to sell my TR6?

Hi there,

after a more or less tough time due illness I am back. In the last couple of years I was already playing with the idea to sell my beloved TR6 who is with me since 16 years. But now it it time to change form the playing mode to reality. I want to sell the car. Why?

My total mileage has dropped from year to year, averaging 500 in the last few years and dropping. And to see that my friend has only the rubber slippers to stand flat makes me sick. I am for sure not a collector. And the car runs perfect and is in a perfect condition.

But - it is a RHD. In Germany it seems difficult to find lovers for this variant. I still do not understand why, I liked the driving through whole Europe always a lot, ok apart from driving in a parking garage with a ticket machine.

So I am thinking to sell the TR in the UK, means I should offer it online. Btw. what is the best selling portal for that? 

Then arrange some viewings at a fixed location to then go there with the car. Before, of course, exchange as much information as possible that there is already some seriousness.

What is the meaning of that plan?

Or should it better to find directly a reseller?

Take the best photographs of exterior (both sides, front and rear), cockpit controls showing Overdrive Lever (if your car has one fitted), Kilometers run on the odometer, engine bay from both sides.  Be honest in your description and place onto https://www.carandclassic.com/list/41/tr6/ - this should be free of charge.  Whoever purchases it may decide to import it into the UK, in which case they will have 14 days to declare it for a NOVA certificate https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/telling-hmrc

The TR was owned by a member of the british rhine-army till mid of the 1980s. Then it was sold as a very used car with nearly no worth  to a german. He fully restored the car and sold it to me another 20 years later.

In my opinion it would  be a re-import to the UK and no tax or duty is to pay. Am I right or wrong?

If he had it as a tax free personal export then you may have to pay tax, if he bought it in the UK and then took it with him to Germany then no you shouldnt need to I would have thought.

well, that could be difficult to find out. What I know so far is that the car was build for the home market in 12/1973 and the destination (dealer) was "Quantock Motors Limited, Swindon" in March 1974, according to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust.

If you are importing even a first registered in the UK car, which has been out of the country for more than 12 months, there is a 5% tax on cars more than 30 years old, applicable on reimport on the invoice price + shipping costs + duty (normally a flat GBP50).  I had to pay this recently on a TR5 I reimported.  After 12 months out of the country, the car is treated as "permanently exported" by the DVLA.  Prior to Brexit, this would not have been the case for cars that still had a UK registration, but would have been the case, I believe, if they were re-registered in another country.  Same charges were applicable, by the way, on an NZ-new Daimler SP250 I imported in 2019.  Cars need to be unmodified to qualify for the reduced rate.  See https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/paying-vat-and-duty

I wonder how they would know? My TR6 spent a substantial time in Scandinavia. On its return PO applied for an age related plate. When I bought it I set about trying to get its original reg back with Derek's help. DVLA said as far as they knew it had never left, number was still live and of course I could have it back. Lady I spoke to was a bit embarrassed they'd allowed another reg to be allocated to the same chassis number !

I am sorry to hear your sad news.... Such a shame you are not in Spain I might have been interested.
