Some success to report...

I bought the 3/8 unc bolts, and a tap and die kit, and some driveable allen keys,   as suggested by experts above,  and this morning tapped out the existing hole and lo and behold the new bolt fitted!  I haven't done that since school days in the machine shop or "Metalwork" as it was called (some 50+ years ago).   Feeling very chuffed with myself.   I wonder what the next challenge will be...
