And petrol in the US is a whole lot cheaper than it is here. Has it been happening in the UK as well?

As Stuart says always has been a problem when prices go up.

Trucks especially can have 600 litre tanks so well worth nicking, especially because the fuel line is often exposed or easy to access on outside or underneath the tank, which has a bottom maybe 12-15” high from the floor. So the thieves have an easy time.

Remember the good old days, when they just used to steal your catalytic converter?  :(

As this was in America, I'd suspect a bullet, not a drill.

the YouTube channel "Just Rolled in" has frequent accounts of shot up cars, some owners admit it, some deny all knowledge.

I know it includes the hike based on being located on a busy popular trunk road, but at the beginning of this week on the way back from the Dales, I needed to buy fuel at Blyth services on the A1, ESSO E5 at £2.129 per litre.  Next time I'll either plan a lot better or take a chance by leaving my planned route and go searching for cheaper fuel nearby.
