Door window adjustment

Recommended Posts

Hi All.

I'm trying to adjust the door window after fitting a hardtop, the screen appears to be at the wrong angle but if I adjust it so the window sits correctly, then I can't get the rear fixings in ?

 Any suggestions ?

I did just that last week.

You first need to fit the HT front, rear and middle losely. It was a bit of an iterative process, with some pushing and so. Are the rubbers between HT and rear deck sitting ok? And is the HT not resting on the interior trim in front of the tank?

Are the inserts from the rear fixings adjusted ok (not screwed in too much) so the HT sits too high?

Once it was fitted I noticed one window was almost touching the B-pillar. It had maybe 2 mm clearance.
I was (lucky?) able to align the window to the wind screen and the hard top B-pillar, sort off. Looks like your glass should be a bit higher? You need to remove the door card for this.

But as said, first get all fixings in, then adjust the glasses, if needed.

Nice hard top by the way!

Hi Mark,

that was not the case on my car. I had adjusted the windows to the soft top frame (did not have a hard top at that time), one side was ok, the other needed correction.

I was concerned it would be hard to align but once the door card was out (yes, those pins for the handles), it was corrected in 1/2 hr.

Luckily the rake of the windscreen was ok.

I used a small diameter (3 mm) screwdriver to “feel” if the bolt holes lined up on the rear shelve.

Hi Waldi.

I can get the window to go higher but the angle along the screen, upper A post is wrong. When I adjust the screen to get this right then the rear fixings don't aligne.

Cheers Mark.

Hi Mark,

what are the rear fixings exactly? (sorry, my english).

I aligned the side windows such that I divided the clearance both sides as best as possible, but I do not have nice parallel gaps. Maybe you cannot achieve that with our cars, after 50 years on the road, well, I could not.

Cheers,

Waldi

Maybe you will have to loosen the wind screen bolts a bit and tilt it backwards to eliminate the missing distance.

But first check what that does to the other gaps?

Hi Mark

Do you know if or not the rear deck has been replaced this could be the problem with the misalignment, I had trouble fitting mine but with the window gap a good fit with the soft top did not want to adjust the windows so fitted a make up seal arrangement this was in TR Action a few months ago, also photo below but made it a perfect fit no wind noise or water in.

Good luck

Keith

Hi Keith.

Car was restored 20+ years ago so to be honest I don't know. I think I've got there now, basically robing Peter to pay paul.

not perfect but time will tell. I don't remember reading about your modification, what did in intail ?

 Cheers Mark.

Hi Mark

It was about mid 2020 that it was in, looking at a lot of Sixes at shows with hard tops the window gaps alway looked poor and mine did also even at the screen end the trim tapers in on a curve which stops a good seal. I made up sections using thin gauge steel and then with seeking trim adjusted to suit with only self tapping screws retaining it I can send you drawings if you pm me.

Cheers

Keith

Hi Mark

Don't forget you can adjust (slightly) the angle the door glass sits by slackening off the winder mechanism bolts, you may need to adjust the door glass channel guides too. Its not an exact science i'm afraid -a lot of push/pulling to get the best fit -Good luck!

It could also be that you have a TR4/4A glass fitted as the way the rear dips does suggest that to me, heres a 5/6 glass in a 4a you can see where the difference could occur.

FWIW this is the last TR6 off the line and fitted with hardtop, look at the way the rubbers go.

Thanks Stuart.

I have bought new glass, not that it's a garentee that it's correct. No difference from the old glass.

cheers Mark.

Yes but do you know they are correct as theres not much visual difference unless you have the two types side by side see pictures below.

Hi Mark, not a lot of help I know, but looking at your pictures, Stuart's pictures (of a 5/6 glass) and then my own definitely 4A glass (fitting a Surrey Hard Top with no gaps) I'm fairly certain that you have a 4A glass ... sorry.

Cheers Rob

The above pictures are of a 4/4a glass and a 5/6 glass so you can definitely see the subtle differences.

Look at my pictures especially the first one and you can see its more the rear measurement and the shape of the bottom centre cut out that makes the difference, its really hard to spot unless you have the two side by side and I dont have any of them here now to do the comparison again. Those pictures where taken a few years ago when the proper 4/4a glass became available again and I changed mine from the 5 glasses that were all that was available when I rebuilt mine 28yrs ago.

I presumed the first measurement of 400mm is the 4 and the 410 is the 6 ?

I have a 4 in at the moment in the workshop, not sure if I could tell the difference with the glass in the 4.

 Cheers Mark.

You might be able to if you remove the door card, then you can get a measurement, the 4/4a winder mechanism is different to the 5/6 one and so the lower channel that holds the glass sits at a very slightly different angle and this is why the glasses are just a little different. You`ll also spot that theres a slight difference in the angle of the front and rear edges of the glass.
