I see its for the later CR series why does no one reproduce a bumper for the earlier cars, it must be easier to fabricate?

Simple economics?

The later bumper will fit all cars ( except the later US with rubber over riders.)

Also Roger they could not tell me what grade of S/S they were made of? In my opinion they have to be made of 304 marine grade like the ones from the Far East.

They are chrome ones rather than S/S.

If they are it begs the question how good is the chrome and will it last?

Now here is a question for the TR6 specialists and those with accurate knowledge.

Is the main pressing of the early front bumper the same as the later one?
Is the bracket work that is welded to it, the thing that makes the position different?   I think the captive nut at the wing ends changes size too.

If so I will ask the manufacturers if they would produce tooling for the different brackets of the early design and an assembly jig for welding them in the right places and find out how many to order to cover those additional costs to make a return on investment worthwhile.   They will probably need at least 2 good  (as in tatty but not crashed) front bumpers to use as patterns that may not be returned intact.

Access to a couple of unmolested cars would be required too, to check the tatty sample’s accuracy before sending them away for patterning from.

Armed with the right info perhaps SDF could get involved.

Cheers

Peter, I should add that I do have an original early bumper that has been on my shelf for the past thirty or so years that I guess I will never get around to having repaired so that could be used as a pattern. It is the original one from my car, ORN 625K in the earlier post,  so I know that it does fit, has good chrome, minor damage on the underside of one corner and a sheared off fixing stud.

If its as good quality as a rechromed original then it should last a very long time.

There is still a lot of variation in the quality of rechromed.

New items often looks good to start with only to start looking shabby. I guess its all down to the preparation and the process which costs money.

Hi Pete,

I have an original early front bumper going spare, its actually on e-bay at the moment. It has some minor defects and the captive nuts have been replaced by welded studs but it is basically straight and usable. Not had any takers yet!

This would be great news, it bugs me having a stainless one fitted lower than the original one (CP).

Hi Folks,

I contacted Jeff M at Moss and he replied with this -

These bumpers are a very good reproduction, made in Taiwan by a company whose quality is always consistent and good.

Only  the Later 822530 version of the TR6 front bumpers has ever been remade(going back circa 30 years), until now most owners have been content with this situation

The 822530 sits further away from the body and has stronger boxed in mountings, It will fit all models of TR6 except the late USA version with the raised fitment position, however the early bumper 908376 also fits all models.

I will ask Pete at BMH if he would be interested in pursuing the manufacture of the early version.

Many thanks to Jeff for a quick reply.

Roger

Some of the original chemicals that were used 50 years ago have been banned 20 to 30 years ago. Therefore the plating will not be as good? I would only want s/s in 304 grade!

What Howell (Walsall) told be some 25 years ago when he rechromed original parts for me, is that they first remove the old chrome, then fix dents, then submerge in a “copper” bath (basically the “filler”, then polish, then the “nickel” bath and finally a “chrome” bath. Think they called it double plating.
