image.png.f3a0ca55f26c7324da227e6caabde385.png Hello guys, I hope you can help : where can I find a chain tensionner washer (item 77 on the drawing, sorry for the poor quality) for a TR4 engine ? It seems to be a very hard steel.image.png.f3a0ca55f26c7324da227e6caabde385.png

Well spotted Stuart !

I used RB website for my search, where it's item 77, but it's item 15 on Moss website :D

Hi Roger and Stuart,

Yes, it seems to be a rather hard metal, certainly to resist to the tensionner friction.

I need only one at the moment, but it don't seems that easy to find.

I can't believe it is 'special' or 'Hardened'

It's part number is WP18  which suggests    W= washer  P = plain.

If you Google “WP18 washer” you get a few mentions, but they all relate to the tensioner washer asked about (Not just TR, but suitable for MG Midget, Austin Healey Sprite, and Triumph Spitfire)

It does not seem to be mentioned for any other use.

Maybe… it is special because of the OD being bigger than a normal 9/32” ID washer (1/2” in the case of the WP18) and not because it’s hardened.

Anyone got a 9/32” washer hanging around to measure?

Charlie

Yes WP 018 X is the original fitted item.  It was used in this position on all 4 and 6 cyl TR engines.  Plus other vehicles.

Whether it is hardened I cannot tell from parts listing

I do know it is not plated (that is the X suffix)

The spec says it is 9/32” I’d.  & 1/2” od.

So WP 0008 which is 5/16” id washers is a touch sloppy and larger od at 0.690”

single WP page follows.

Yes please, thanks for the kind offer, Stuart.

So this is definitely the correct one as I’ve just removed it from a scrap block here. Does look judging by the slight wear on the back that it’s done a few miles.

Great Stuart, now I'll have a model, and should be able to find someone to test if it's hardened, or not.

Hi Chris,

stroke it with a smooth file.

If it is hard the file will glide over the metal.

If it is soft the file will cut it.

Roger

We await your testing.

Moss offer WP18 for 50 p.

Next time you go Roger could you take a file and test one?

Thanks to Stuart, this washer is now in a smooth running TR4 A IRS engine B)

I tested it with a smooth file : it's less hard than I was thinking, as the file was able to leave a light mark, but it seems to be harder than an average quality washer.

To be fair, I'm not a metallurgist

We can make those then….

1/2” silver steel bar bored to 9/32”

Part off at appropriate thickness and harden/temper accordingly.    About £3 each….in small batches of 10.
