Hello fellow members.  This is my first posting since I acquired my ‘new’ TR3A last summer.

My question is whether there’s a good authorative publication that identifies all the parts for TR2s to TR3s with their original part numbers.  
I know there’s a Brooklands book out there and the various suppliers’ (Moss, Rimmer etc) catalogues are very helpful, but I would like to know more about the variations through production.  

For instance I am particularly interested in the evolution of the gearbox covers (which I always refer to as the remote) as they related to overdrives.  See other posting re remotes.

The TR2-3A Spare Parts Catalog, 4th Edition is a terrific resource and is available online a number of places.  The Standard-Triumph Hardware Catalog is a useful accompaniment as it cross references all the fastener details to exactly what Triumph used on our cars.

Nothing particularly exciting happened with gearbox remote casings.  Essentially the same basic casting that changed with extra/fewer drillings.

Triumph used this same remote casing on Saloon/estate cars 2000/2500/2.5,  Dolomite Sprint, plus Stag. So there are a shed load of available sources out there.

3 synchro gearbox. TR2/3

1/ Drilled for dip stick only.

2/  Drilled in one place only for isolator switch Ro work with overdrive on 4 th only.  With dip stick hole drilling

3/ Drilled in two places for isolator switches to work with overdrive on 2/3/4.   With dip stick hole drilling

4/ Drilled in two places for isolator switches to work with overdrive on 2/3/4.   No dip stick hole drilling.

 

4 synchro gearbox. TR4/6 Stag, Big Saloon and estate and Sprint.

5/ No drillings nor tapped holes for switches or dip stick.

6/  Drilled in two places for isolator switches to work with overdrive on 2/3/4.   No dip stick hole drilling.

7/ Drilled in three places for isolator switches to worth with overdrive on 2/3/4.  And to operate reversing lights No dip stick hole drilling.   (TR250/5 onwards)

When TR6 arrived things got complicated with J type overdrive and US spec interlocks.

A Saloon gearbox remote (1972 T 2000 estate in my case) only has one overdrive enable switch on the 3/4 selector rod, & a reversing light switch on the LH side at the rear.  No overdrive on 2nd gear.But the raised boss is present, & the selector rod has the correct indentation, so a switch can be fitted.

What overdrive is fitted

Yes, The standard Saloon overdrive is not as strong as the TR version, which is why it was not configured to be used in 2nd gear. They can be uprated by the addition of extra springs, & increased hydraulic pressure. (mine has been)

Modify at your risk imho not a good idea

Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead are experts in transmission repairs, they do a lot of classics & specialise in Healy 3000's (they used to race them)

They modified my overdrive from 2000 saloon spec to TR spec (& changed the rear casing to TR type, which is the same as AH 3000) 

I am happy they know what they are doing

The j type was never designed to operate in second gear and I had one modified years ago and it never liked it so it’s your call

Thanks also re the thread about the gearbox remotes.  Very useful re the various stages and I have now acquired one with a dipstick hole and 2 tapping and have fitted the switches from another box to prove that it should now have o/d on 2,3, and 4 but I now need a dipstick !

However I’m still not sure what gearbox I have - the only number I can find is on the boss of the clutch operating lever is 4 H 69 and now wondering if it’s from a saloon.  The overdrive ref on the side is 22/61711 034276 which I think is ‘normal’ though the funny thing about the overdrive is that the solenoid is fitted horizontally !  Any ideas ?

Andy, mine was a saloon box, I got the bracket to alter the position of the solenoid from Overdrive Services in Sheffield.       www.overdrive-repairs.co.uk

Also bear in mind previous comments about the saloon overdrive not being configured for use on 2nd gear without uprating.
