Grinnall tr8 Power steering

Recommended Posts

Hi, I bought a Grinnall TR8 last summer. One of the problems that came with the car was an oil leak which was picked up as an advisory on a couple of MOT's. I think it's due to the power steering system, pump or hoses. Does anyone know where the pumps come from? The car was converted in 1991 and I've been told that Grinnall used whatever they could lay their hands on. Looking at an SD1 pump on line, they don't look the same!

Hi David, it is most likely to be an early Rover SD1 type rack and pump. The early systems had a reservoir separate to the pump which was mounted to the block. The components for these are largely NLA now and so have been superseded by the later pump type with the integral reservoir - with a blue cap usually. You can buy a simple adaptor plate to switch to the later type integral pump and reservoir.

I have to admit that my Grinnall had it all removed as I grew tired of trying to fix it from leaks, failed pumps or noisy racks. When the rack valve gear started boiling the fluid that was the final straw for me after 12 years of perseverance! The only thing I miss is the quick ratio rack , apart from that I preferred the manual steering.

If you get stuck, I still have a few spares left - certainly a couple of spare pumps knocking around.

Hi Scott, many thanks for that. My system has a separate reservoir bolted to the bodywork behind and to the left of the rad!

The car currently has a full stainless exhaust system with two small silencers at the rear making it fairly quiet. I may chop them off to give it a true Grinnall sound!

Best regards,

David

Hi David

I’me the opposite to Wayne having never had any issues with my power steering.

I would replace the hoses first as they perish with age.

The pump you and i have is a Rover Series 1 pump (30 series: ERC1941).

The pump can be refurbished by a specialist and one was on Ebay the other day (125077100759). I can confirm the newer combined pump and reservoir works fine as i’ve converted another Grinnall in the past.

Regards

Adrian.
