Malbaby
Hi Guys....am I correct in assuming that the Stag and Sedan racks are too wide to be used successfully in TR4 series. Any other racks that will mount in a similar fashion to the TR4. Edited December 19, 2021 by Malbaby
ianc
There are two types of rack fitted to the TR4 series. Early TR4s have a rack bolted to a pair of legs which rise vertically from the chassis. Later TR4s have a rack bolted downwards onto the front of the chassis. I believe that Stags are wider, so probably wouldn't fit - Stuart or Peter would be able to confirm. Ian Cornish
Malbaby
Sorry, I should have noted for TR4A. Are Dolomite racks the same width? Edited December 19, 2021 by Malbaby
badhuis
Did Dolomites have power steering? If you are looking to have your 4A with PS, maybe better or easier to put in an electric conversion. There are some topics here about that.
Z320
If I remember correctly „Malbaby“ is Malcom and he knows all about because he asks questions about this issue since years from different directions? But you are welcome, Malcom! He also explained why he dies not want to use a EPS, but I forgot his explanation…. Ciao, Marco Edited December 20, 2021 by Z320
Malbaby
Sorry to bring this up again Guys.....my latest query on this subject was initiated by seeing a post by a guy that had just bought a TR6 that had a P/S rack conversion. Unfortunately, he did not know what car the rack was sourced from. Apparently the car steers well. I am currently building an EPAS steering column unit for my TR4A [6 cyl] project using an MGF column, and would like to find a P/S rack that I can fit to my green TR4. Z320
Hi Malcom, I‘m sorry but I‘m afraid you have to find out yourself and just do it? Perhaps you find someone who sells a used rack or borrows you one for testing. Wishing you much success Marco
Andy Moltu
If it's a TR4a I thing Classic Driving Developments do a power steering conversion. Not cheap at £1300 but they have done quite a few.

Andy Moltu
No idea I'm still on arm power!
Ian Vincent
I’d start by looking for something like a small Ford with the same track as a TR, obviously prior to the introduction of EPS and look at the spec for their racks. Rgds Ian

Rgds Ian Some of the sidescreen car rack conversions use a MK2 Escort rack so small Ford would be a good pointer. Stuart.
Drewmotty
Be aware that to avoid terrible bump steer what you are looking for is a rack with the inner ball joints at the correct width. The track rods can be easily modified to achieve the correct overall track. That’s why the (close to) ideal rack for a sidescreens car is one from the much wider TR7 Merry Christmas All Edited December 25, 2021 by Drewmotty
