Ernest
Hi all It does seem that whenever I take the TR out nowadays I have a problem! Out today and within 5 miles I noticed the temp. gauge was on red! Stopped immediately and on checking the radiator still felt cool but the thermostat housing was very hot. I did replace the thermostat about six months ago and no heating problems over that last 300 miles. So not sure what the problem might be. I am thinking that it is perhaps the thermostat sticking. Any ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated. Best Wishes Ernest
RogerH
Hi Ernest, The thermostat is the obvious candidate. Take it out and pop it in a pan of very hot/boiling water and see what it does. They are all (now) cheap and nasty.!!!! Roger
Mike C
Air you sure that your thermostat is not air locked? The block could be hot but an air locked thermostat can be still closed. Also I always use thermostats with an air bleed hole- either one supplies with the thermostat or a 2mm hole drilled by me. The thermostat can easily be removed and checked as Roger said. I use a cheap hand held infra red thermometer to diagnose more intricate cooling problems. The first thing I'd do with one in this case is check the block temperature to make sure the problem wasn't with the temperature gauge.

I’ve lost a Landcruiser engine through a stuck stat, sure enough it failed the boiling water test as described when it came out, good basic test. The bypass hole is a must really as per other post. Roger You can still find the old Waxstat type and these are far more reliable than the modern replacements. Bruce.
Ernest
Thanks for range of advice. I have ordered a new thermostat from Moss and will 'boil' prior to fitting! Have a good weekend all Best Wishes Ernest
Z320
Did you fit a bellows thermostat 300 miles ago? Don‘t laugh, I found one installed in a TR6 water pump housing which a friend gave ne to have a closer look on the TR6 bypass
AarhusTr6
Hi Are the cheapo replacements not still Waxstat ie a wax pellet concept?? How do they work then? Richard
Waldi
Good question Richard, I wondered about that too. You deserve a thumbs up. Cheers, Waldi

Richard Get a genuine Western Thompson type for an MGB or Mini rated at 82 C degrees and you will not have trouble. Bruce.
