Instantaneous start

Of late I have noticed that sometimes after a few days of inactivity my car will start immediately on full choke from cold, just like a modern with EFi. On other occasions the engine will turn over for a second or two before it fires. Any theories as to why this might be?

Could be a sign of the fuel pump getting "lazy"? Failing to top up the float bowls.
