Racing my 1955 Mercedes 300SL : Nico Rosberg

Recommended Posts

  • Deggers changed the title to Racing my 1955 Mercedes 300SL : Nico Rosberg

Great stuff Deggers, … I’m out of the country with dodgy internet but saw enough of the first clip to agree fully with Hamish; ‘just rich spoilt boys playing with their toys’ for own egos….. b*@sh*@ to all arrive on the back of transporters and have huge team to maintain….. and valet??!!….     And then to get into private jets rather than actually driving?………

in a ‘proper rally’ a well prepared TR with a couple of folks who knew what they were doing could easily more than hold their own…… (ok, I used to have a real chip on my shoulder and loved it when the side screen cars we used to enter on a shoestring out performed all the expensive exotica…. And….. going way off track…. used to live in Monaco, owning Riva’s but being very aware however pretty the design was, the limitations of bashing them around the Med off MC and further)

Looking forward (as with all your posts) to having a proper look at both clips in due course

Cheers in the meantime

Tony

Ah, Tony you sort-of raise an unresolved (unresolvable?) issue in today's amateur classic motorsport - what actually is a 'proper' road rally, versus what is a scenic tour... versus what is simply an ego trip for "rich spoilt boys"?

As far as having support teams is concerned (as Tony will know but some may not) competitors on practically all the national and international historic rally event formats are forbidden to have any pre-arranged support. But... many of the (more expensive) formats do have organiser-provided sweep mechanic crews. Is that a bad thing? Yes, if you believe it should be like the old days of club rallying where you were on your own with whatever you had in the boot if something broke. No, if you acknowledge that not everyone who wants to rally old cars grew up with the sport and has the skills to fix anything at the roadside or at an overnight MTC. Without that support element, they might not have the confidence to take their cars on the longer rallies which might not in turn be viable to run.

Is it okay to have your car transported in a shiny CARS Europe lorry to the start line? Personally I have no problem at all with that, it's just convenience that some are prepared to pay for, although I suppose you could say it's a waste of an HGV driver at the moment who could be delivering toilet rolls!  For some overseas events there are few real alternatives to getting the car shipped by one of the specialists, unless you're going to try to do your own shipping and import paperwork and risk your car being festering somewhere in a container on the dockside while you twiddle thumbs on the start line. Private jets? Well okay I suppose if I did ever travel to an event that way I certainly wouldn't want to be filmed doing it.

I think we should keep in mind that, to a large chunk of the population who have no spare money even to run an everyday car, the whole notion of anyone like us who can afford to maintain and drive a classic toy puts us in the "up-themselves rich kids" category (well, okay, not exactly kids in our case). Just the way we might ourselves be tempted to look at the chaps on the Rosberg trip.

Bottom line... if my fairy godmother bought me a ticket to one of the Nico-fests, and loaned me a 'suitable' car (with fewer dings and gravel-rash than what I have) would I sacrifice a week of my life to go along? Yes I think I probably would. :D

Anyway some of the cars in the vid were lovely. My take-home would be the Lancia.

That is quite the slide after just coming across the bridge(?) at 2:22 - and there's another one to get your attention at 5:00.

Focuses the mind doesn't it!

Masterfully piloted by the man, the legend, Daniel Müller at the 2012 Arosa Classic Car Rally, for the Swiss Historic Racing Team. (225/50VR16 street legal tyres with a four speed box 1:3.89).

He says :

"It's truly one of the most amazing car designs ever made. But from a race drivers point of view there is another aspect far more impressive: her sheer capacity to go fast is enormous! A weight distribution of 50:50 [front:rear] allows a perfect vertical axes centre of rotation, and she turns extremely quickly from one direction to the other. Admittedly, it took me a while to drive her fast. Why? Because the rear axle construction (well known as the widow maker), and her recirculating ball steering (imprecise as hell!), both take all your attention and are a huge challenge. However, I've been lucky to drive the car at it's edge for more than two decades, and I haven't found anything nearly as demanding or satisfying. She's my favourite lady!"

More videos can be found at his Youtube channel, here : Daniel Müller/youtube.com

And for those who'd like to get in touch :

"Get in contact with me for advice on better car control with your own classic. More safety and way more fun, all at the same time! Get personal driving dynamics training. Location by appointment. Win your class either by driving on your own, or me driving it for you!"

Many thanks Tony, glad you like them! As always, more to follow.

(Btw, wasn't aware you used to live in MC? And owned Rivas no less! Lucky chap, I've had my eye on those for years).

Cheers, Deggers

Again, good points very well made Nigel…….

……. And, importantly, let me know as soon as your fairy godmother comes through…… you will - after all - be requiring a cp-driver and, on balance I could also ‘grin and bear it’ for the week!

Yep Deggers.. Monaco is the ultimate ‘Toy Town’…. And after a few years I had to move back to ‘reality’……. So I settled in St Tropez - I was a very lucky boy!

Two of my Riva’s (which I acquired for a token amount from David Bowie - quite a story behind that, suffice to say for now, within hours of first meeting him I played a major role in nearly killing him, his super model girlfriend (s), Jagger, Iggy Pop etc, etc when we swamped a Riva type boat entirely unsuitable for the beaches of Mustique…We recovered the situation and all lived to tell the tale…. And always got him Boston Whalers and Ribs from then on (and we taught him to swim!) - These two boats, tenders specially made and designed for an Italian mega yacht, were unique….. and I squandered them. - I was also a very stupid boy!

If that quote was written on the back cover of an autobiography  . . .  I'd buy the book!  :D

(I feel a whole new thread coming on!)
