En route to Goodwood my left rear wheel became detached. The retaining nut had unscrewed from the driveshaft and was collected in the cap in the centre of my alloy wheel . We missed a very nasty accident. How can this nut unscrew itself???

Only if it wasnt torqued up properly as it should be  Nylock. Though depends on what drive shafts you have fitted?

A fellow traveler going across France in 2006 had the problem of the nut undoing on his TR5. Thankfully the wheel did not fall off.

I had a spare hub unit in the boot so we did a quick swap and back on the tour.

I have been banging on for ages about refurbished hubs being a no no.

Nut unscrewed, or threaded bolt broken of, or axle shaft broken off?

Any play in the wheel bearing checked before, alway good with old axles.

When I noticed play in one both went in the scrap and I bought new Goodparts axles.
