Afternoon all, there is a group of TRs going to Scotland week starting Saturday 4sept for 12 days from the Redrose group and we are stopping at kyleakin on Skye, for 4 nights we have a couple of free days does anyone have any suggestions of places we could visit or good roads/Lanes we could try out? We have some places to visit but up May know off some we have missed.

I suggest the road up to Staffin and on through Uig, stopping off at the Old Man of Storr and Quirang. A visit to the Talisker Distillery at Carbost, picking up some oysters as well as a bottle or two. You could also drive down to Elgol and take the boat trip up to Loch Curuisk and have a closer look at the Cuillin ridge

+1 for Applecross - excellent food and beer - hmmmmmm beer.

Plockton is worth a visit for lunch. Nice looking harbour and more beer - hmmmmm

Eilean Donan Castle is worth a look but very touristy  - Get there early or very late and get your car in the right place for a super pic.

If you can get the ferry to Mallaig you could do the Jacobite railway in reverse.

There is the Cuillin brewery up the top of the island in Uig.

A really nice alternative route on/off Skye is the little Kylerhea ferry which links to some lovely roads around Glenelg and on to Arnisdale on Loch Hourn (great little cafe on the loch shore at Corran). Watch out for seals and probably a sea eagle during the short ferry crossing.

Be prepared for Applecross to be extremely busy. In some ways Plockton (as Roger mentioned) is a better bet for a lunch stop.

(Watch out for the Highland Thistle Rally which will be on and off Skye over that weekend. We won't be in our TR on this one - wave nicely if you see our Alfa - but there is a well-campaigned 3A and a 4 in the field of 38 cars.)

Don't forget your midge repellent!

Of course they may be in decline by then, so only 50 gazillion per cubic metre rather than 100 gaz/m3 in June/Jul. Or you may see... none at all. Gotta love 'em.

the Kylerhea ferry is a must do experience.  If you're loaded , be prepared to ground the exhaust a little when getting on /off - may depend on the tide I suspect.  the road on Skye to the ferry is very 'interesting', with some interesting views for the passenger that as a driver you will probably miss, unless you stop.

The Skye motor rally is an impressive event.  The roads are closed to the public but nobody tells that to the sheep or occasional goat!

Have a great stay there.

And yes, it rained a  bit, but no midges . . . .1867030614_14ScrapingontotheKylerheaferry.thumb.JPG.7d2b90f4b820025a10f23e9ec6d6adb6.JPG

Morning ferry to Bute, visiting Mount Stuart House and the Castle, back to the mainland on the small ferry and a nice run using the logging roads.

I must need an eye test - I misread that as dogging roads.

Lovely Breakfast this morning then a short drive to the Corran ferry, with some wonderful roads to Mallaig. With a few stops to admire the views, as we got to Mallaig ferry for our journey to Skye the Steam train had just arrived. We now have four days on Skye.
