An engine build video

It lives and has had its first outing on the road so TRE are satisfied and to get mileage on it before head tightening and proper set up.
the engine is ace and I’m very pleased.

it was a bl@@dy cold and damp outing so a big thank you to the whole team.

I was worried about the unknown extras bill. You know the ones that appear once the car was apart.
There were non.
The only real “extra” was the radiator and expansion tank  but I had expected that as I had done an epoxy glue repair during the season to a small weep and I had the opportunity to go for the later rad set up and the very neat TRE expansion tank that fits in the peddle blank hole. Together with knowns like new fuel pump etc.

job done to the plan, spec, time frame and price. You really can’t ask for more .

( it was a lot easier for them and me that we sourced another TR3 engine to work on at their leisure and that convenience cost wasn’t a lot at all )

I just need it back so I can start to get the miles on it. I will be following their advice as to how/method.

I guess it is a visual angle thing, but the front trumpet looks like it’s almost touching the inner front wing.

There is sufficient distance. More than with the H6’s and longer inlet manifold (4a?) that have just come off

i also have the harder engine mounts so minimal engine rock.

The car is home following its heart transplant. delivered this lunch time with all the old bits. I will have to decide if I keep the old championship class winning engine ?

I have only taken it up a busy road and back but wow you can sure feel the difference.

I think that I can see a Rev limiter on my Xmas list. :o

I need some road time to get it properly run in. So looking like after Xmas.

then it’ll be ready for the new season and new class.

It’s a high quality build but it’s not an all singing and all dancing steel billet crank race wonder-  it will easily settle into it new championship class. And clearly a well mannered road car.
just as ordered.

I can’t praise TR Enterprises enough. From the very outset they were open and honest in discussing specifications to get 160+ bhp and similar torque figures. They also built it to an agreed price that included swapping engines new carbs and other ancillaries like flywheel clutch dizzy etc

i had made the decision to get a spare engine for them to work on ( that they also approved as suitable ) at their convenience during the season to allow me to carry on racing. It was very cheap thus a no brainier.

after the racing season finished they had the car to do the swap and we changed some defective parts (leaking rad) and added some upgrades (spin on oil filter adapter etc)

and as promised the car is back before xmas with miles on it by them and the head retightened so they know that crucial part of the running in has been done properly by the builder.

They sent me pictures during the engine build - see the video at the beginning.
And during the engine swap.

after a cold trailer ride a couple pumps on the throttle and it sprang to life. With a lovely sound ( that’ll be my exhaust then !!)

Tom and Simon are great (Apparently when Tom paints your engine it’s worth 10bhp) but they sure have some knowledgeable staff who are also happy to take time to explain things where owners want to know and with those who they know get there hands dirty on their own cars.

thanks TRE and merry Christmas

+1 for our TR specialists. We are lucky to have the number of specialist parts and services suppliers we have.

Thanks guys. I’m really chuffed and can’t wait to get some miles under our belt. A useful period of sensible motoring to get to know it before learning the new characteristics in competition.

but the five mins on the road does show how free revving it is and that a Rev limiter would be a good investment.

and that it still retains great road manners.

Is this what running it in carefully looks like?

No that comes under the description of

I trust you will be running with the rh headlamp removed to get more air to those big sucky things?

I once created a pair of 7 “ head lamp buckets with 5 3/4” lamp units fitted .  Cutting the back off the buckets got more air  into the engine compartment and kept the car road legal.   No idea if the modification was worth the effort.  The set up looked weird so came off fairly sharpish.  The idea was stolen from MK. 1 XJ6 fitted with air con.   They had air intake grilles around the inner headlamps set into the chrome bezel.   So a lot better finished.

or buy one ready made. https://mossmotors.com/headlamp-air-intake

Any numbers to get us envious?

Too early yet Peter. It’s only just set up with enough miles to tighten head.  I was aiming to to get about 160 when talking to TRE. That would be about 170/Tonne which would be amazing.

It has these filters on now so I should be safe. I think they are 34’s underneath these filters.  It was the trumpets that made them look like they’d drag you in if you got too close :o

it’s a standard crank so the revs aren’t going to be extreme sticking with the 5k red line but it should have good torque instead, which should cut down on the gear changes I had to make. Holding 3rd gear on some tracks where I was over revving in 2nd.

it’s a technical build to match what I needed on road and track. Most of my events are hills like Shelsely or short twisty tracks where I need the added torque, hence the 89mm. It’s not a Goodwood car with mega high revs, high speeds even through the curves

Hamish, the little I know, or think I know, is based on what I have read, yet what you say seems to confirm my impression (bearing in mind that I am genuinely ignorant, so they can be no more than only impressions).

Namely, that Webers can be set up or "programmed" to suit different needs, such that there is no reason 45s should be fitted with 36mm chokes nor, for that matter, 48s. Even 48s can be set up with 34mm venturis, if you want to retain TR torque, as opposed to top end rpm and resulting greater speed.

My question then is if you have the other figures for the Webers?

Thanking you,

Ciao, David

Hi David.
it may be remiss if me but no I haven’t looked inside the carbs. the butterfly wing nuts on the “lids” are wired up.
and to be honest I don’t know carbs enough to start messing with them and I know that I couldn’t do better than this initial set up on the rolling road.

my plan will be to get some miles under my belt learning the new characteristics of the car and get it bedded in. Then another rolling road session before the season opener.
