Gearbox Tunnel Cover Replacement

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately the original fibreboard gearbox tunnel cover on my 5 now needs to be replaced. I see that fibreboard, fibre glass and plastic replacements are available. Can anyone recommend which material is the best to replace it with please?

At the moment I haven't looked too hard but I'm assuming it can be replaced from inside but I see the gear stick and handbrake arm in the way?

And finally should the rubber seals between cover and footwell floor/bulkhead be 'glued' down or just bolted together?

Look forward to your views, thanks Jon.

If you are looking for good quality and fit then I suspect the Racestorations split cover product would be your best bet - not cheap though.

Two part tunnel is a must if starting from scratch. Mine is solid, being a few years old, but I now have an G/Box level inspection hole, very handy and as Roger says, a 2nd inspection hole for solenoids etc is a nice to have. Tunnel is screwed down with a rubber weather seal (and silicon if you want it !)

I am ever-so biased. Racetorations every time and sometimes good discount at the IWE show or get him to bring you one and save on postage.

Only down side you will have to plot the fixing holes then drill the cover to suit.

My original tunnel turned to paper mache at the 2007 IWE, apparently not water proof

I fitted one of these: https://www.scparts.co.uk/sc_en/gearbox-tunnel-1-122812.html It fitted well, once the seals have been compressed then all the holes lined up well. You will need the seal kit as well: https://www.scparts.co.uk/sc_en/seal-kit-1-122833.html

I fitted a split tunnel from Racetorations in 2004.  I believe the design has improved since then e.g. access holes now cut for purchaser - I had to cut mine.

Strong and very useful, especially in TR4, as it avoids the need to dismantle so much of the cabin for basic access.  Should last for ever!

The other favourite Is the ‘space age plastic’ covers from TRF.

They also make the glove box in the same material.
