The logical suggestion Colin but someone tried that recently I think, and found the parts were completely different between the OEM and after-market pumps so they didn't fit.

I have been out and about in the car this weekend without the regulator fitted, and it has been running fine with no flooding at the carbs.  At the same time as I fitted the regulator I fitted new viton tipped needle jets assemblies to the carbs, in place of the much hyped up Grose jets I originally had installed.  It would now seem that the flooding problem was a combination of pump pressure and Grose jets.

Stuart originally said that going back to standard float jets would solve the problem and he was right.

It would seem that the Grose jets are more easily forced off their seats by the extra pump pressure that the original SU jets can handle.
