Picture says it all really ? And inside gearbox

Update

i know you are as intrigued as me ( well May be not !?) as to what was found.

Tom at https://petecoxsportscars.co.uk

has been true to his word and opened the box and started to strip it and sent me some annotated pics

this is the first 

look closely and you may just see - with a trained eye and experience - the minor defect.

Answers  on a post card as they used to say. !!!

Would that have been caused indirectly by broken thrust washer?

they think that yes this is where it started.

but don't say anything Kevin  see if the others can spot the issue ?

That failure happened to me on a borrowed LHD TR6 once.

Which top-hat bush was fitted at this repair?  The one piece brass as orig (129939) or the two piece bush and washer (129939X) from Stag?

Originally I don’t know Peter 

they are rebuilding as robustly as they can. 
this is as taken out compared to what should be.

had off the cuff estimates for serious money too.

but for now the value to me is the quality of service, the competency of the work, time frame and supporting small business that keep us TR’ers on the road from someone I know and trust.

Can someone please explain how the laygear and the actual 2nd gear function during operation?  Thank you.

drive from the engine enters the gearbox (via the clutch) on a shaft with a gear on it. That gear is in permanent mesh with the first of a series of gears mounted on the countershaft. Thus the countershaft, & all the gears on it are rotating all the time the clutch is engaged.

The main shaft is the one which carries drive to the rear axle (via overdrive if fitted) On the main shaft are a number of gears which are in constant mesh with the corresponding gears on the countershaft, but, they are not locked to the mainshaft, but are free to rotate on it. In between 1st & 2nd, & 3rd & 4th gears are "Synchro hubs" these  rotate with the mainshaft, & have a sliding outer part, which can moved to overlap, & engage with the mainshaft gears, thus locking them (one at a time !) to the mainshaft.

The exception is reverse, for this an "idler" gear is moved along a short shaft to connect a spur gear on the countershaft to a spur gear on the mainshaft.

well I “popped” down to Redditch to collect my box at lunch time and just arrived back home. There was some queuing on the m5 and m6!!

but tomorrow I will be trying to refit my box /od to the car. 

Thanks to Pete and Tom for a quick turn around. 
 

he has been studying my videos and suggests a non od close ratio set up……….;)

but that will have to wait a season or so now 


 

All this is either a good or poor use of time off work ?!,!?

perhaps mike has an hour to share in the morning ?

Dunno Bob. But surely can’t hinder. Pete put it back on the rebuild.

is it not factory ? It’s an early tr6 box.

The strap was fitted to reduce noise from the remote.

Not sure about effectiveness.  My car has had once since I bought it in ‘75 and I have swapped it to replacement gearboxes throughout my ownership.

Did you have rattle noises from the lever?

Do you know the post with AndyR100's recommendation about?

Simply browse "rattle" and look for his post (can't link that on my smartphone)

it was what was already on the box. Not something Pete specially supplied.

it’s only a large washer with a bit of flat bar welded at right angles.

Bolts to G/B mount and up to the selector.

That sounds like a home made version. I have one on my box that I bought from Pete Fenlon, it’s fabricated from a single bent piece of flat bar.

Genuine factory items were one piece.  
 The item was redesigned and swapped sides when the J type overdrive arrived on TR6 and is a twisted metal strap that fits between the RH gear lever fix bolt and an overdrive casing stud/nut.
