PodOne
Morning all I need a new alternator for my car (1969 UK PI TR6). The car will be fitted with electric rad fan, Lucas fuel pump, electronic ignition, period looking radio, feed for sat nav/phone charging point and running LED lights apart from std halogen headlights. The loom will be new. From a bit of a search I was thinking 45A will be adequate. So before I order one which suppliers offers the best quality options? Thanks Andy
trchris
Hi Andy If your original is a lucas unit I would find an auto electrical repairers near to you and have it overhauled as you will find most are going to be imported low quality units sometimes genuine lucas units appear on ebay and you can get good exchange units through euro car parts Chris
RobH
There are plenty of relatively cheap Lucas clones available Andy - either 18ACR or A127 and in most cases they work just fine and will be a direct fit. If you want to get something which might be better built then consider the Denso types - which are physically smaller (and at least twice the price), but the fixing will be bespoke. PodOne
Thanks both. Unfortunately I don't have an original to have rebuilt to a higher amperage which would have been my preferred option and I want to keep her looking as OEM as possible. I'll keep an eye out or if anyone reading this has an original Lucas one fit for reconditioning please drop me a line. Andy
Richard Pope
I know you don't have one to repair but cam across this for those that do. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181025062176 Would seem an easy route to use this kit that looks simple to do.
