Girling Differential Problem

Recommended Posts

Guys,

The diff of my TR3 suddenly seems to be driving one wheel only on the off side of the car. No warnings, suspicious noises or other it just happed as I drove the car forward out of the garage and then into reverse and no backward movement. Its not the gear box as the drive shaft engages in reverse and rotates normally.

Any suggestion for cause. Also if anyone has a spare rear axel or failing that the differential case spreader I'd appreciate knowing.

Thanks.

Phil B

As it is in a TR3  have you broken a half shaft?   Very unlikely with a Girling axle.

Jack the car and turn each wheel with the opposite wheel stopped and still on the floor and see if the prop shaft turns.   If the prop shaft does not turn, that is the side of the axle with the problem.

This is the picture of an ok TR diff.  The bits you are interested in are visible.

if when you drain the oil you stir the drained oil with a magnet and you find metal that may indicate more before removing the rear cover.

Take the back cover off your diff and compare.   You are looking for two sun gears, two planet gears and a crown wheel with all its (37 or 41. ) teeth.

I have not ever required a case spreader to install a TR diff.   You will need a method of removing the bearings.

Axle rebuilds try Peter Cox Sportscars  https://petecoxsportscars.co.uk/

PS   Moderators    This needs to be in the TR2-3B section.  Can it be moved please?
