Can you have too many ……….?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if you can have too many wheels and tyres.
I still have 2 sets of TR6 steel wheels in the shed somewhere too.

on the left are my road legal but soft low profile sprint tyres.  Lots of acceleration but not that higher speed. As I have a 4.1 diff now.

on the right are a set of second hand well used Avon CR6zz that I plan to use at aintree sprint as that is a fast circuit sprint and the low profiles and 4.1 diff will just not be fast enough.

In the middle are my vredestiens sprint classic “everyday road tyres”

collected over a few years and at relatively little cost. The wheels have been 150 to 200 a set and the tyres have been cheap too.

the sprint ones are on ready for 3 sisters sprint tomorrow.

Seems to me you have good reason to have this many sets, you could also add a set of slicks, and set of wet weather tyres.

Guess not Hamish,

but how you store them is very, very important.

Upright, away from sunlight indeed any light, and rotate them regularly.

John.

John,

I only have one set so this isn't a problem for me but I'm interested in your comments. Why upright, I can understand the rest. I've seen tyre storage racks before which are just a "pole on wheels" and you lift the wheels onto them (I think for storing winter or summer wheels when not in use). I do note that better tyre shops tend to store the tyres vertically so there must be a reason.

Thanks,

   Neil

Hamish, what is the one on the extreme right? I assume a spare, but what size?
Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim

its an old 145 I think. Only keep it as it fits in the slot on the 3

Hi Neil

the tyres worked well. It was a hot but high cloud day.
the results are here

https://www.timeteamlivetiming.co.uk/RaceClasses/Details?ClassName=TR&Times=Split&Type=T&Run=0

and if you click on the race numbers it opens a link to all our times including the splits  I didn’t improve as I’d like

as you can see my first 64ft is good ( sp1) this is a measure of your launch off the line.
due to my 4.1 diff and lower profile tyres and the traction they give.

Shaun (148) is in a full race dolomite sprint.
peter (146) is in a road tr7v8

shaun in his full race dolly sprint 1st with best time 88.31

Hamish 2nd TR3a 89.35

peter 3rd TR7v8 (first event) 105.31

my gearing wasn’t quite right for this track layout and I think the car was over revved a bit.
those time where you really need the next gear but the corner is too close and would cost time to take that gear only to change down again for the corner

hopefully I have some video !

H
