Hi All,

Just purchased a 1971 TR6 - but I am aware that many on here will not appreciated it!

It is powered by a BMW M50 2.5 engine with a BMW 5 speed box.

I have to say is drives brilliantly and I think the performance suits the car.

First job is to work out why the break lights don’t work!

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the forum. The first thing to check is your brake light bulbs (the bulb holders are a weak point) and the brake light switch. The switch is mounted on bracket adjacent to the brake pedal, check it aligned correctly, if you have a test meter you can check it's functioning properly.

Post some picks of your car, particularly your engine bay please.

Richard.

Sounds like a great car! Regarding the brake light the original switch is not brilliant so it could be that, mine stopped working and I replaced it with a BMW switch from 70’s or 80’s, E30/E21, much better quality then the original TR6 switch.

Rob,

firstly a very warm welcome to our forum, but you are a teaser,

you can't tell us about a car such as yours without showing us photos,

look forward to seeing some.

John.

Let's see the car, come on.

Sounds like a good engine choice, I used to have a BMW E36 coupe with the slightly later M52 engine, smooth, great performance and bomb proof.

Engine bay photos please!

Previous advice about the brake lights is spot on.

Rob,  There are plenty of factory-spec TR6s so the odd mongrel adds hybrid vigour. You wont be ostracised on the forum. A puff of WD40 on the brake switch plunger might work. Peter

Thank you for the warm welcome - well I found that the brake switch was missing! Local factors had the 'right' part - nasty piece of plastic that was loose in the slot!

I will eBay search for an E30 and get it sorted

Attached are the some pics!

Neat job. Getting steering column past the exhaust manifold must have caused some head-scratching ! That is something I'd get checked out thoroughly, there must be a joint somwhere on the chassis or body that is non-standard.

Hi Rob,

Welcome. Your car is not the only BMW powered TR6 in the club. Alan Wilkinson from Derbyshire Dales has a 3.0L BMW diesel in his TR6. The torque is staggering, so were all the mods to the drive train to deliver it to the wheels.

Thank you Peter, not something I had thought of - the garage I am taking it to are a good bunch, I will specifically ask for their opinion.

These are the guys who did the work. I contacted them but they basically said that they had no further information. It was the best part of 10 years ago I think.

Very nice installation!

I believe BMW own the rights to the "Triumph" name (I may be wrong), so depending on how your thinking is, it's still a bona fide Triumph.

Richard.

Brilliant!!! - That is what I will say from now on!

Thats great to hear - my one has not had the power increased or anything - so is quite fast but not scary. - it is quite high revving, so actually top speed realistically is around 80 - but fab to drive in the lanes

Built in Reading, my neck of the woods! Did see that advertised about three years ago. It’s had a lot more upgraded than just the engine. Must have cost an arm and a leg, and a lot of re-engineering. What not to like, you get a more efficient modern power plant, and still retaining the looks.

Yep, a lot of suspension work - but strangely, did finish of dash and other bits - the oil pressure and temp gauge do not work and a few interior bits are hanging off!

Todays project is to wire the high beam / dip beam into the overdrive lever. - I will leave the foot one in place but might as well make use of the lever

It kind of does! - also the weight and stuff must be similar and the handling seems just fine
