rvwp
Hi Guys, I am currently rebuilding a TR6 gearbox fitted with a 'J' Overdrive. All looks good, but the Solenoid seem not to be functioning. Looks like this is a sealed unit and probably not repairable if electrically defunct! Just need confirmation if this assumption is correct before looking for a replacement. Thanks Rich
Richard Pope
Are you sure the gearbox switch is OK? I'm doing exactly the same at the moment and my switches did not work on the gearbox selector - not tested my solenoid yet. Just as a comment, I bought a gearbox reconditioning kit from James Paddock as it was the most complete in terms of parts to replace and cheaper than some with fewer parts. However it did not contain the three bushes - top hat and 1st & 3rd - which I thought was a shame as why would you not replace those plus a thrust washer. Still I got these from Chris Mellor as he was considerably cheaper than anyone else.
Lebro
What was the quality of the main ball races ? I bought a kit for my gearbox from Moss, & found the ball races supplied were cheap rubbish, & were knackered after the process of fitting them. Moss do sell quality bearings separately, but they are not what they put in the kit. In Fairness to Moss they did put things right when I complained, & I now have the good ones (original spec) fitted. Bob.

rvwp
The overdrive has been stripped down on the bench and has been cleaned ready for re assembly once new O rings/gaskets etc are received. The solenoid was not working but 'nothing ventured nothing gained', I managed to remove the piston, cleaned it up and reassembled it and it now works. Will probably take it apart again and install new O rings before installation though. Problem now resolved. Rich

Bob. have had similar issues with Moss bearings and also with a lay shaft which had pitting but Moss replaced everything and this was a couple of yrs ago
Lebro
My layshaft from Moss seemed ok, Gearbox is working well now - very quiet. I also changed the countergear for a 3 bearing type. Bob.
