What other 'Sports' cars do you drive - new or old

Recommended Posts

Some great cars here....

Adding my tuppence worth late on, currently: 71 Elan Sprint and 92 XJS both one previous owner ... although, not best pics, I did once post on one of the other club sites that "I had the best examples of the best sports cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s"............. You might imagine not every keyboard warrior was fully aligned!?.. think I conceded ‘ two out of three ain’t bad!

Oh well in for a penny.  Here is my 'modern'. although she is 9 years old now......  Owned for seven years.  A different style of open top driving.  3 litre turbo diesel, 250ps, DSG.  I'd quite happily drive her just about anywhere without wondering whether I got there or not.  Unlike the TR, scary task tinkering with anything on this. :o

I've been l lucky enough to have owned quite a few modern sports cars including a couple 911s and AM Vantage V8. Whilst they were all great cars this, in my opinion, beats them all. Quick, light, excellent handling and practical whilst not overly expensive.

The Corrado was on my list in the 90s, an amazing car.

Not a sports car but great fun. I have owned since new a 95 Holden Commodore V8 which was modified by Holden Special Vehicles.  Modified further about 10 years ago when it was bored and stroked to just under 6 litres. It has about 360bhp at the flywheel and weighs just over 1500kg. It does have a sunroof so it is a bit like a sportscar!D06D275C-627D-43C2-A423-8BCF7FCB177B.jpeg.43a06b1ed0667e620234e19d078e726d.jpeg

They were available over here as The Vauxhall Monaro, proper hooligan car.

My 4 door, 70s saloon, 1600 push rod, sports car ( historic/targa rally image courtesy of Chicane media).

It handles like a sports car and is very chuckable....not sure I have the skills to get my TR4 back from such sideways action, although I have never really tried but others do rally 4s successfully.

My not TR car is a 1965 Sunbeam Tiger, fully 'nut and bolt' restored by me 10 years ago.

Great car to drive with it's 4.2 Lt Ford 260 Mustang V8 engine.

Hi all, my daily driver is an Audi A5 Quattro TDI slightly leaned on, giving just over 300hp with 500nm torque, plenty quick enough for me and relatively economic and very comfortable.

1963 Alfa Giulia Sprint 1600. For historic road rallying, like my TR4. Both about the same size and power but quite different drives - the Alfa needs to rev its glorious little twin cam and has a very different ride to the TR, handles very deftly, more like an Escort.

When driving the TR I play something by the Rolling Stones in my head. In the Alfa it has to be "Days Like These" by Matt Munro.

Not a “ sports car” per se, but it is a 1963 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster. I had it for 15 years and was the car I had prior to my TR4A (talk about opposite ends of the spectrum). I went full concours on it and I swore I’d never go down that rabbit hole again. You pressed one switch on the door and the (soft) convertible top folded up and stowed away in the trunk (boot). The mechanism to make that work was a nightmare, but when it worked, it was a miracle to behold!

Here’s a picture sequence of the top mechanism. 8 position switches, 8 relays, 4 hydraulic pistons, 3 electric solenoids, 2 electric motors, and a hydraulic pump!:o
