Hello and welcome to our forum?

Let us have  a name, we are a friendly crowd?

Car tyres of the day, where 4 ply.

Re-inforced car tyres, (Or van tyres) where 6 ply.

I think I am pretty certain that there could not be made a 2.6 ply tyre.

My guess would be that your original owner, for his own reasons specified re-inforced rears, (You would not fit them on the front only)

Perhaps it was just a preference or perhaps, he had a specific reason, long distance with a full boot and boot rack would be one.

John.

Hi,

I've ordered a new (reissue) BMIHT Certificate and asked them to explain the weird entry about tyres so hopefully it will be explained or else deleted in case it's an error in reading the handwritten notes on microfilm.  Hopefully, someone actually reads these requests rather than just pushing paper out the door. I'll report back once I get the new certificate.

Thanks,

Jeff

The mystery continues: I received a reply from the BMIHT and the archives officer is as stumped as we are:

"I have checked the factory record and '2.6 ply tyres' is definitely recorded, it is quite clear. However, as to what it is referring to, like you, I cannot make out. I've been through Bill Piggott's book 'Original Triumph TR' and can find no mention in that either.

Best Regards

Richard Bacchus

Certificate Officer"

The commission number is TS/81419-L. Since posting this question I have gotten an answer from a TR expert, Bill Redinger: "Your question is an easy one: the car's original tires were bias ply tires, with 2-ply side walls and 6-ply tread area. Should be 2/6 bias ply." That makes sense to me. If I ever want to show the car in a concours I guess I'll have to find a set of nice reproduction bias ply tires, but chances are I won't go down that rabbit hole.
