Bench test TR4 Wiper motor DR3A

Recommended Posts

Good morning all

having just got back to working on my 1962 TR4 (after moving house and restoration) a question for you , currently the body is off so no loom available - the wiper motor doesn’t look too bad , no signs of burn out or worn armature or any other damage .

But with the aid of a 12 volt battery I am unable to get motor to turn and despite reading various threads on the wiring (all very confusing) has anyone any suggestions on which terminals to connect to test it ?

It will depend on whether it is a single or twin speed version.

The way to determine this is by looking at the connections on the motor. If they are spade terminals (2 of them) it is a single speed motor, If it has a bundle of three wires coming out of the end plate terminating in bullets it is twin speed.

In the single speed version one of the spades is labelled 2, the other labelled 1. terminal 2 should connect to one side of the battery, and terminal 1 to the other. It should then run.

If it is the twin speed version, you need to work out which wires are which. If you get it wrong you can damage the motor. There should be a green wire, which you connect to one end of the battery, and BOTH the other two wires need to be connected to the other end of the battery, It should then run.

It doesn't matter which way around you connect the battery; either motor can be used on positive or negative ground vehicles.

Good luck

TT
