Hi Ian,

can the front screen frame be moved further forward?. How does the roof fit !!

Have you got a TR4/4A glass. The TR6 glass has a different angled bottom where it fits into the channel.

The Pivot bolt for the regulator can move up/down slightly.  This does have an effect on the angle - experiment.

If you get desperate and after you have pulled your hair out it is possible to cut one of the regulator arms, give it a slight bend and then weld solid.

Good luck

Roger

Hi Roger

Glass and regulators etc. Were purchased from Moss so l believe they are correct.

Screen is as far forward as it will go.

I'll have a play with the pivots before l attempt the regulator arms

Many thanks lan

Hi Ian,

I have recently fitted new winders, side channels & the correct TR4A glass from Moss. The only 'old' bit was the bottom channel as these are apparently unavailable. I had a slight problem but nothing like as bad as yours. TRGB recommended that rather than wedge the glass into the bottom channel use sikaflex as that way you can adjust the angle slightly before it sets. That is what I did and while not perfect it works fine.

There is a lot on this forum on the difference between the TR6 glass & the 4A glass which has only become available in the last few months.

cheers,

Allan

Hi Allan,

I like that idea from TRGB in using Sikaflex to hold the glass in the channel.

The correct 4A glass has been available for a number of years now.

Funnily enough I set my screen angle only this morning.

I removed the air vents to access the bottom bolts of each screen bracket, which I loosened, along with the top 2 bolts on each side of the screen.

Using special tool number 74-329, and a piece of wood, the screen can be cranked up to align with your windows. Its true that winder mechanisms can also alter

the rake, there is a lot to think about. also taking care not to crack the screen, It worked for me thankfully.

Hi Pete,

make sure the roof fits after adjustment.

Soft top is forgiving but the Surrey hard top or a dedicated hard top may have a problem.

Roger

Surrey tops are priced outside my remit Roger, so one less to worry about...........

very useful thread Pete, I'm following your progress (about a couple of months behind you). Can someone provide a phot of exactly where the window height should be relative to the screen and backlight? The problem I have is that the gap at the top of the window and the hard top is good at the rear but wider at the front (It's a US aftermarket hard top so no comparison with others)

It's a US aftermarket item, I have no idea of the make. The glass is fully raised, but I can get it higher by adjusting the stop, I was trying to find out how the glass should look fully raised

By the looks of it you have the wrong glass fitted as I had a similar though less pronounced problem when I first fitted the Surrey top to mine which had TR5 glasses fitted as that was all that was available all those years ago when I restored mine, since replaced with correct 4/4a glass and now the fit is much better, your "Parrish" top may also fit differently.

If you look at the underneath picture of mine before I changed the glass you can just see what I men.

Stuart.

Thanks Stuart, funnily enough I had looked at that picture and noticed the similarity; I'm in the process of stripping down prior to painting so I will have the windows out again shortly and will look at the measurements, I seem to recall seeing a post years ago which showed the 4a/5 differences. Still find it a bit odd that both L & R window glasses would need to have been swapped over the years, always possible, assume nothing :)

I posted pictures of the two different glasses back to back with measurements to show the difference a while back.

If the glass is correct, I suspect your problem is the forward arm of the winder mechanism that is bent downwards

IMHO...  one problem is the design of the top at the front/outside edge. It does not come down enough, similar to the Honeybourne top.

Assuming the angle of the "B" post of the backlight is correct, the glass that you have fitted must be incorrect.

Your glass runs fairly parallel to the B post, so unlikely to be a regulator problem.

Have you considered having glass cut to suit the opening, as I do not think that off the shelf glass will fit nicely.

Ideally in full up position the front corner of the glass should come close to the highest point of the chrome cap. In practice it's more often like on Pete's picture.

So I stripped down the doors again pre-painting and checked the window glasses, definitely both TR4 variant. I've also fettled the slight bends in the winder arms, I hope that will sort that issue. The large round pivots on the regulator arms are pretty sloppy, can these be replaced, is there anyone who specialises in such a repair?

That often happens Im afraid as it was a poor design hence why it changed for the 5. I have got over it in the past by having a slightly larger pin machined up and bore the hole to suit.
