Looking to buy a TR6

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am an experienced classic car owner but never owned any TR. Looking for a 6.

Just wondered what I should look out for, mechanical bodywork underside etc. Model? 150 bhp? 125 bhp? Etc.

Interested in the main in TR6 specific problems rather than general issues you would find on older classics.

Cheers

John.

Most cars put there have changed a lot from their original specs. So wouldn't obsess over whether it is a 150, 125 bhp. Just go for the best condition. Chassis, body then engine and drive train as that roughly the order of cost/difficulty to remedy. Overdrive is a must.

Cheers

Tim

As Tim said the Chassis is the key part to check, if all is good there it’s great basis to start with the car. There are some good guides by the most knowledgeable on here, best to do a search.

Hi John, here is an article with some specifics you can look out for.  As to regarding model I would focus on the condition above everything else.  UK cars tend to be higher value but can come with bigger rust problems.  Most important thing is be careful and look for as much history as you can.

John, welcome to the forum. You wont have experience of the Lucas PI and sorting that can be a challenge,  rewarding if you enjoy tinkering. Peter

Budget matters John.

Up to 9k will find you something rough but maybe a runner.

20k will get you something that may require refreshing but has an mot.

30k will get you something that is very good. But perhaps not concours

35+ will be in very good condition have some history probably off body bare metal respray rebuilt chassis and rebuilt engine.

after that  it’s difficult to price.

The PI system is fine if it is well maintained there are some specialists out there but it is really a simple system just don’t fiddle with it when it’s working. Engines are robust and the difference is only really noticeable between carb and PI cars imho.

Overdrive gearboxes are great for economy but can bit a bit fickle if worn inside. 4 speed ones a almost bullet proof.

Body tubs can rot almost anywhere usually front footwells, floor pans, sills.

Chassis can flex - it’s a soft top. But if you can’t open the doors on two post lift then it will need looking at, normally in the t shirt areas.

its not all gloom and doom, they are brilliant to drive, cheap to maintain and as mentioned if you are handy with a spanner and have the tr6 maintenance book most things can be repaired at home.

there are plenty out there just take your time looking.
