Peter Cobbold
The ground around the Svartsengi power station continues to rise. Today's update: https://en.vedur.is/about-imo/news/a-seismic-swarm-started-north-of-grindavik-last-night
Peter Cobbold
The eruption has restarted, closer to Grindavik town. Iceland News Service RUV has a live blog and links to webcams: https://www.ruv.is/english https://www.ruv.is/english/2023-11-16-three-webstreams-of-peninsula-are-available-397300 Edited January 14 by Peter Cobbold
john.r.davies
At the same time, the people have returned to Grindavik, and repair of the infrastructure had commenced. But one man was doing his own and fell into a crevasse, Despite the best endeavours of the emergency services, he or his body have not been recovered and the town is to be evacuated again. john.r.davies
The fissure that Peter posted about may be seen form this webcam, showing how close it comes to the edge of Grindavik! I can't post the link! I keep being told that the URL includes a forbidden emoji! Go to YouTube and search for "LIVE: New Volcanic Eruption Near Grindavik, Iceland (Cam B)" JOhn Edited January 14 by john.r.davies
john.r.davies
Dramatic views from a Coast Guard helicopter, flying at about 1400 today over Grundvik. The earth barrier built to prevent lava from the main fissure has two breaches but little has leaked through, but another fissure opened right outside houses on the edge of town, an d two have burnt down. The caption says that the lava tunnel has gone right under the town, so goodness knows what will happen next!
john.r.davies
More news from Grindavik. The guy who makes these sees the latest developments as the end for the town.
Peter Cobbold
Tks John, Interesting that the houses are all insured against natural disaster. Society covers the risk. Whereas in UK, one flood and insurance becomes prohibitive. Peter
john.r.davies
New eruption, This s fixed live stream camera on Þorbjörn hill, just south of the Blue Lagoon and power plant, north of Grindavik and to the west of the main road to the the town. In the last fifteen minutes the edge of the lava flow has moved from the centre of view to near the left edge, so fast that the rippling lava at the front is clearly see, even in this low definition view. I think it is following the main road to Grindavik! AND STOP PRESS! It is! Vehicles and diggers have come in to view on the left edge (south) of screen! If the lave flow gets much nearer this could be the end for Grindavik! Sorry folks, the board won't let me post the URL of the YouTube link! It says, "The value entered includes a character that is not allowed such as an Emoji." Here's a still form just now as the camera zoomed into the new berm the diggers have made. I think it's across the link road to the Blue Lagoon complex, while the lave flow behind is right along the main road to Grindavik.
john.r.davies
This is a screen grab from Google Earth. The camera is on thorbjorn (Iron village) hill to the right (south) while the eruption is from the old scar along the top edge of the view. The main road along the middle is to Grindavik to the south (right). The lava appears to have come around the hill between the road and the fissure, Mount Sylingafell, over the road and towards the Lagoon.
john.r.davies
And here's where it's coming from: Sundhnúkar - Live from Iceland - Webcams around Iceland That line of fire fountains is three kilometres long. It's on the other side of a low ridge from a different camera, and you can see the lava flooding over towards the road on the left of the picture. On the live view the flow of lava is clear and fast. Peter Cobbold
Sudden eruption about 2 hrs ago. Live webcam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAQzsB9ev9Q Edited March 16 by Peter Cobbold
john.r.davies
That eruption has died down now. But it was most spectacular! Look on YouTube for a real time episode from AndreB (e acute accent)! It just burst from the earth, and develops into an enormous fire fountain in seconds. John
