Bleednipple
Sad to read of Hannu Mikkola's death yesterday aged 79. While he never (AFAIK?) drove a TR, he was blindingly successful over 31 years spanning multiple eras of rallying, from the Mark 1 Escorts from 1969 to the Group B Audi Quattros in the 80s and on in full time WRC until 1991 and even later as a guest driver in various events. He excelled not just on stages but also on endurance events like the East African Safari Rally and he and Gunnar Palm won the 1970 London to Mexico, ahead of Brian Culcheth and Johnstone Syer in their Triumph 2.5PI. RIP one of the legendary Flying Finns.
Hamish
That’s very sad. I loved the rallying in the late ‘70’s and ‘80’s and as a teen lusting after a works escort then the Quattro!
iain
Sad news, just loved watching him tame the Quattro.
