RogerH
Hi Nick, have you TRied to locate it using a big screw driver stethoscope. Blade on the engine and the handle pressed to the ear. It may help localize it. Worn cam and tappets can make this type of noise and adjustment does not work. Roger
Nick Brooks
Thanks again for the further ideas since I last posted. Roger - I have a 2 foot long screwdriver of my grandfather’s that does that job superbly! Now the weather has warmed up, I shall work my way round all these ideas. Cheers, Nick

Nick Brooks
Hello everybody, sorry for the delay in reporting back. Thanks for all your ideas which were much appreciated. CTC was right I’m pleased to say - 2 new manifold gaskets later, she’s sweet as a nut! And performs better. I’d never have thought it with what sounded like a real mechanical noise, but it was worth trying that first before having to do an engine strip down... Thanks again, Nick
