Not having bumpers on my TR4 (when its finished!) I thought that a set of parking sensors would make sense.

Ebay had many types for sale, and I was amazed at the prices, so I bought a 4 sensor kit for £15, has anyone fitted these contraptions to their TR?

All tips appreciated.

I don’t have them fitted but I have reversed confidently waiting for a beep and had to jam the brakes on when I remembered that I wasn’t in my modern!

As an aside I have fun parking my sons van attracting beeps and shouts from people who don’t know that there is a very stealthy camera pointed at the rear bumper.

Hi Pete,

when was I was renovating my boot lid back in 2015 I thought it a good idea to try these parking sensors.

So I ordered a set from Ebay. They arrived quickly and they were black - the boot is whiter.

So I ordered another set. they arrived quickly and thankfully I had read all the words this time and they ere white

The first instruction/warning was that NOTHING must be anywhere in their vision - bumpers, over riders NOTHING.

Does anybody want either a set of white or black parking sensors - FOC.

with that in mind, I was thinking of fitting the rear units in the holes that the bumper irons would normally go through.

At the front I was going to fit them in the grill, there are 2 holes where the "stay bracket" would normally go, from the inner wings to the overriders.

we shall see???????????

I have fitted them to our little Sceicento in the plastic bumper with no problems.

I also fitted some to the steel bumper of my Jeep Cherokee, firstly direct into the steel. They were sounding off all the time whether there was anything behind or not. I then enlarged the holes, & fitted rubber grommets into the holes followed by the sensors, they now work ok. so direct into the steel boot lid may have been problematic.

I have them at the rear in the bumper iron apertures.

Factory fitted on my euro box and I have a tow bar fitted too which extends further rearward than the sensors that are flush in the bumper face.   The tow bar does not affect the operation

In my Evoque that I recently replaced, frequently I got a parking signal when passing a driveway gate post whilst on a main road. I also frequently got a 'car undertaking you' signal too especially when passing long grass at the curbside of a country lane. All very useful!

I have them on my modern, a Citroen.     The system failed, and seeking advice I learned that they make a noise!    Very quiet, best heard with a stethoscope, I quickly found the faulty one, and bought a direct replacement online.    It fitted perfectly, the wiring was plug'n'play, fantastic!   A victory for the DiY, cost-cuttng motorist!    Except it didn't work.

I surrendered and found an auto-electrican locally, who smiled softly when I told my story.   He explained that Citroen and other manufacturers use the standard sensors, but have them 'tagged' as one of theirs.     A Citroen, or other, system will not work unless the sensor is tagged.     For that information I felt I had to let him do the job, so he ordered and fitted a new sensor, and it worked.      But the cost was ten times what I originally paid!

So adding them to a car that doesn't have them won't have that problem.   There may be specialists who supply kits and will advise.   I've just bought a Transit van, to us as a camper.     Only door mirrors, and I want to watch my trailer, so I looked for a reversing camera to use as a rearview mirror.   I found https://www.parkingcameras.com and it's owner Martin, who was enormously helpful with advice.    He doesn't sell sensors, but some most discreet cameras that might suit!

Hi Pete,

that is interesting.  Are the faces of the senors flush with the sticky out bits at the back of the car (bumper/over riders)?

Roger

Thusly.

Someone once said that size isn't important.

Fitted a set to my daughter's Focus. Had a selection of shades to choose from, including the metalic grey her car is. All I had to do was to cut the holes (hole cutter supplied in the kit) Hide the control box and bleeper inside the car and run the wiress from the sensors to it along with an earth and cut into the reversing light wiring to power the unit.  £15 on ebay The hardest bit was selecting the correct colour from memory.

Whilst not that relevant to TRs the kits are so cheap and can come with more sensors if you want to fit front ones linked to a display for not much more.  Crazy really when they were once an expensive option on new cars.

If fitting make sure that they are at the correct height or they will pick up the road! (Ask our esteemed chairman about that one!)

As for John's problem with the Citroen having tagged sensors, a cheaper option might have been to replace them all with the kit unless they linked to the display?
